Take the tour with a guide first and then take your time afterwards to walk around and see everything else you may be interested in.
Standing in the place where the Japanese signed their surrender to end the war in the Pacific, and looking up on the wall to see the picture of all of the dignitaries who were in that very spot is quite moving. Touring below decks was quite interesting because you don't realize all of jobs on the ship which are required to keep everything running.
Just make sure that you leave yourself enough time to enjoy it, particularly if you are someone who likes to read and review the items/photos in detail.

Enjoyed the guided tour by staff who were both knowledgeable and respectful of the site. Appreciate the efforts to preserve this site that should be special to all the world.

A great way to end the day. You see the museum and exhibits that show the lead up to and the attack. This shows where it ended in Tokyo Bay.

Extensive tour of the battleship with lots of info. Chance to look around and go below main deck. Truly a national treasure.

It was surreal to learn a little bit about the history and be on the deck, see the dent, have dinner and dancing on her deck. I would have liked to see more of the ship than just the deck and the Admiral’s quarters. We had a lovely person as our guide, but due to her non-native English skills, I had a difficult time understanding her and it felt like the other guides around us were offering more information that she was. I liked her and I know that she was putting forth a great effort.
