A visit to the Arizona Memorial is highly recommended if you are staying more than a day or two in Oahu. The site is exceptional - from the information placards to the layout of the grounds to the movie to the excellent US Park Service Rangers to the Memorial itself. The visit can seem overly regimented with tickets and specific times you can actually go to the Arizona; however in light of the volume of crowds it is understandable.

The memorial to the submarine fleet was eye opening as I do not believe it well known how many submarines were sunk in WWII. Highly recommended.

Logistics : It is possible to negotiate with a taxi for a $70 round trip from Waikiki. This helped save a lot of time and was far cheaper than the meter (>$100). Once at the memorial you collect your ticket to schedule your movie / memorial tour. If your ticket is for 1 to 2 hours after your arrival, you may approach the US Park Ranger once he has let all the people in for a particular movie time and ask if there is space for 1 or 2 others. The answer is usually 'yes', as people book the tour as part of large groups but then are no shows.

As Canadian's the connection we had to the USS Arizona Memorial was definitely less than our American counterparts. However, regardless of nationality, I think the memorial is something anyone travelling to Oahu would not want to miss. The video presentation shown before the boat ride out to the memorial was very well done and really helped to set the stage for what we would expect when we got to the site. There was a feeling of quite reverence that permeated the memorial. The part that touched me the most was the crewmen that survived the disaster to live full lives and then chose to be interred with their shipmates. It was touching to see their names engraved on the monument and the year in which they rejoined their shipmates. I think it really helped our kids understand a little more how senseless war can be and how precious life really is.

If you can only do one thing in Honolulu, this is it! No frill, no thrill, just reflection. It lifts your trip/ vacation to a different level than your usual vacation activities.

Visiting the memorial is certainly a very moving experience. The actual structure over the Arizona is a tasteful monument. The entire area is well organized, informative and the staff are very knowledgeable. Impressive to be water shuttled by Navy.

If you drive to Pearl Harbour, go early! Very interesting place to visit. Our kids (10 and 14) liked the audio tour especially and visiting the Arizona is a memorable experience.
