Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Verde Canyon Railroad is a Southwestern adventure that takes passengers on a ride through Arizona’s backcountry, only accessible from the comfort of this train. This legendary “boutique” attraction allows members of groups an uncommon view of a wildly-wonderful red-rock canyon. The four-hour excursion requires no laborious effort or exertion except by the highly-trained staff who absolutely love what they do. As evidenced by exceedingly positive reviews, they do it very well. Verde Canyon Railroad is the only excursion train in the Southwest which offers every guest two seats for the price of one: inside viewing through large panoramic windows in all coaches and 360-degree views from open-air viewing cars attached to each coach. As the train passes “through” a grand canyon, both vantages celebrate incomparable scenery, high-desert flora and fauna, historic trestles, dramatic geology, unusual rock formations and passage through a century-old 680-foot tunnel. Throughout the journey the captivating history of the Verde Canyon and the Railroad unfolds with narration interlaced with a wide genre of popular railroad tunes.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Wheelchair access, Food available for purchase

Love this train ride. It's well worth it to go first class; a first class ticket includes comfortable chairs and sofas, complementary champagne and food, and a cash bar. The train cars are not air conditioned, but are "climate controlled", and were comfortable on a day when the temperature outside was over 100. There are open air viewing cars. The staff was friendly and very informative, pointing out rock formations and wild life, and giving us a history of the area. This was my second trip, and I'd go again.

I was lucky enough to be in a party of 6 in the private caboose and I have to say it was a glorious experience. The carriage is very comfortable with victorian style fittings, 2 observation seats, private lavatory, 2 bottles of champagne, nibbles and our own hostess, the lovely Kenna

The trip is a slow wind along some great scenery with a running commentary on the route and access to 2 outdoor platforms

Everything is very well organized and I would recommend this trip however you travel!

The train ride itself was fun and relaxing. We opted for coach and were perfectly satisfied. We alternated between the outdoor car and our indoor seats. Both had advantages.
The up close and personal immediacy with the normally inaccessible scenery that the outdoor car provided was exciting and refreshing. When the sun became too intense, we retreated to our air conditioned indoor car with its snack bar for a while.
My issues are as follows:
First the depot related ones.
Not only was the food in the cafe uninspired, the help seemed disorganized and confused. When I finally did get my order, it was impossible to find a shady place to sit so I could escape from the noon hour sun.
After the ride and after I checked out the small museum, I headed to the gift shop. They were already packing things up and preparing to close. It would have been nice if they remained open for an additional 30 minutes so people have more time to browse. I did not have time to find a nice memory of the day to purchase.
My biggest issue was with the 2 attendants.
One seemed basically useless but at least he wasn't disruptive.
The woman, clearly the more experienced of the two, seemed determine to drown out the taped narration.Pity. From what I could hear, the narration was well done and informative. Everytime the narration started, she would try to boom over it making impossible to hear. She seemed to be competing with it. I truly felt like telling her to SHUT UP or at least supplement that narration afterwards. What an irritating attendant.

4 hour train ride into areas not accessible by car. Pristine and beautiful! Recommend doing this after your hectic days of driving and sight seeing. Its nice just to slow down, Kick back and enjoy the comforts in the first class coach and have someone else do the driving! Recommend spending the extra money and go first class. These Coaches include private tables, appetizers, and bar. No assigned seats, so sit where you please. We had a small table and comfortable chairs for two. Some tables for four. Inbetween the cars is a sightseeing car which is open air and better for taking pictures. Lots of room for moving around in and between the two cars.

Arrived at the Depot. Nice store inside, with Museum down the tracks. We ordered the First Class Car. Food, drinks free, alcohol for purchase. The car was the Sedona car. Nicely appointed. If you get on the car get on the right side of the car. This area is in the shade. Partys of more than two get to sit in the couch areas. The seats all were comfortable. The food was adequate, and the service was good. The employees on the train were very informative. They kept the train ride light hearted with jokes. You have the opportunity to get up and go outside on the observation platform. This platform has a canopy over it. The train goes about 15-20 mph. Not fast and not bumpy unless you are trying to either walk out or in from being outside. Like a airplane ride. Sways. You go one way for about two hours and then the train stops and comes alongside the train and hooks to the caboose. Your return ride is exactly like the outbound. Music is supplied. All railroad music. Very good. The ride is very relaxing and enjoyable. We got to visit with other passengers. It was a good experience. We will look forward to riding again.
