Owner description: Verde Canyon Railroad is a Southwestern adventure that takes passengers on a ride through Arizona’s backcountry, only accessible from the comfort of this train. This legendary “boutique” attraction allows members of groups an uncommon view of a wildly-wonderful red-rock canyon. The four-hour excursion requires no laborious effort or exertion except by the highly-trained staff who absolutely love what they do. As evidenced by exceedingly positive reviews, they do it very well. Verde Canyon Railroad is the only excursion train in the Southwest which offers every guest two seats for the price of one: inside viewing through large panoramic windows in all coaches and 360-degree views from open-air viewing cars attached to each coach. As the train passes “through” a grand canyon, both vantages celebrate incomparable scenery, high-desert flora and fauna, historic trestles, dramatic geology, unusual rock formations and passage through a century-old 680-foot tunnel. Throughout the journey the captivating history of the Verde Canyon and the Railroad unfolds with narration interlaced with a wide genre of popular railroad tunes.

My first train ride, from the moment you enter your car, we were in first class with Kenna she welcomed us and explained where everything is. Nice seating where you could visit with your group(10 of us), also very nice seating area outside. They offer a champagne toast for the take off and there are chips on your table, They advise you that they will be serving light food, which was very tasty. We had little sandwich's, chicken wings, veggies, cheese crackers and yummy chocolate goodies. The bathroom was very roomy(not like airplane).
The scenery was breathtaking once you get into the canyon of red rock and caves. They point out and tell stories about what you seeing. You are in canyons that you can touch the edges, and a cave you go thru is pitch dark...Awesome! I would take this ride again and I will bring friends back.

If you can afford it, ride 1st class. 2nd class has still the same scenery, but the open car is more crowded. With the 1st class tickets some appetizers (chicken wings, Caesar's salad, sandwiches, veggies with dip, trail mixes etc.) are included and the car is less crowded too (36 instead of 80 passengers).
It's a beautiful ride and very relaxing. The staff has always been well educated and friendly. Besides the varying landscape, we also have seen Eagles on every trip so far.

This is not a "high energy thrill ride", but if you want to relax and see the Verde Vally back country - its wroth the afternoon. Everything is well organized, easy and comfortable. For a train that carries 300 to 400 people per trip, you get personal attention and plenty of information. Staff on the ride was very informational. Scenery is worth the trip.

This was so much fun and very educational our friends went on this with us and all of us Loved it. The history of the Indians that lived in the Caves on the side of the Mountains and farmed in the valley below was very interesting we could not phantom living like that. The tribes people where something else to be able to get down to the valley and then back up to the Cave must have been rough. We rode in the Cotton Wood car and we where entertained by JAN she kept us laughing. We spent all our time in the open air car awesome. we even saw an Eagle that flew right in front of us. You would not be disappointed if you did this trip.ver

So....to be honest, I wasn't sure about this train ride before we got on. But....I have to say, we totally enjoyed the trip! Save yourself the money and just buy the coach class ticket, as you will want to ride outside in the open car the whole time.
We loved the views of the red rock and the Verde River. We were fortunate to see a Bald Eagle sitting on a tree about fifteen feet from us. Amazing.
The train does come and go on the same path, and for me, it was about a half hour too long of a trip, but overall, it was very cool. Probably don't need to return to do it a second time, but very glad we had this experience! Super friendly people on the train, loaded with information also help the experience!
