Owner description: Verde Canyon Railroad is a Southwestern adventure that takes passengers on a ride through Arizona’s backcountry, only accessible from the comfort of this train. This legendary “boutique” attraction allows members of groups an uncommon view of a wildly-wonderful red-rock canyon. The four-hour excursion requires no laborious effort or exertion except by the highly-trained staff who absolutely love what they do. As evidenced by exceedingly positive reviews, they do it very well. Verde Canyon Railroad is the only excursion train in the Southwest which offers every guest two seats for the price of one: inside viewing through large panoramic windows in all coaches and 360-degree views from open-air viewing cars attached to each coach. As the train passes “through” a grand canyon, both vantages celebrate incomparable scenery, high-desert flora and fauna, historic trestles, dramatic geology, unusual rock formations and passage through a century-old 680-foot tunnel. Throughout the journey the captivating history of the Verde Canyon and the Railroad unfolds with narration interlaced with a wide genre of popular railroad tunes.

“Relaxing ride enjoying fantastic views”
Reviewed December 16, 2013

If you are looking for a relaxing way to see the scenery in the southwest, this is it. We took the first class seats and enjoyed our own table in comfortable chairs while drinking wine and enjoying cold & hot appetizers. Best part were the glorious changing views of tall cliffs and deep canyons as we traveled the 25-30 miles one way, then returned the same route. You can stay in indoor cars, or move to outdoor cars as we want to get good views. On this day, we also had a treat of a bald eagle from Lincoln refuge being onboard with us and had our picture taken right next to the eagle. We had great weather and enjoyed the 3.5 hour trip.

“Amazing Scenery in a Very Relaxed and Comfortable Environment”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

I had ridden the train many times before but this was my first trip in many years and my fiance's first trip ever. The first class tickets include a full bar, champagne toast and an appetizer buffet that consisted of crudites, bbq wings, sandwiches etc. As a first class passenger you also have access to the open air car where we spent most of our time. The cars are comfortably appointed and air conditioned, the wait staff is friendly and the guides knowledgeable. You can grab a cocktail, head to the open air car and enjoy the fresh air and the incredible scenery. The train travels 2 hours through an amazing canyon where we enjoyed the fall foliage, amazing rock formations and spotted several bald eagles. If you are good at taking pictures in moving environment bring your camera. Definitely bring your binoculars. After 2 hours the train stops at a tiny, old station (you don't leave the train) and turns around and heads back the other way. The ONLY downside is the narration - which basically never stops. I would rather hear music. Regardless, the trip is well worth the money. TIPS: Go first class/worth the money. For the best views, grab a seat on the "station" side of the train and spend some time in the open air car. Don't bother with lunch at the station, the appetizer buffet is pretty substantial.

“Santa Express?”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

We went on this train as apposed to the Polar Express train hoping to get a taste of the holiday season and maybe not so many kids. The overview states "Christmas carols, story time etc." Santa and Mrs Claus came through the cabin - briefly - to say hi to the kids. Gave only the kids candy canes, which I guess was fine too. Was overshadowed by the bald eagle making it's way through, so said they'd be back. About 20min from arrival BACK at the station they came through again and quickly read a story to the kids. There were no Christmas carols or holiday cheer to be had. And they sold ice cream! They should not represent this as a "Santa Express." Mrs. Claus had a tongue piercing and Santa looked like he sobered up just long enough to get there. Dissappointed that it was not what the brochure said it was.

On a lighter side, it was a beautiful ride and we enjoyed the history on the intercom. Also enjoyed the bald eagle. Service was good on the train.

Also, we went up early to eat lunch, only to find out that there was only outside seating. It was in the 30's. Food was good though.

“Relaxing train ride”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

Last week we rode the Verde Canyon Railroad for the pleasant four-hour round-trip train ride from Clarkdale, Arizona. We were in the 1st class car with comfortable seating. We were also served a glass of champagne and many delicious appetizers. We really enjoyed the scenery through the Verde Canyon and appreciated the knowledge of our guide.

“Relaxing, Interesting, and beautiful”
Reviewed November 23, 2013

Beautiful scenery on a historic route that you not only cannot get to by car, why would you want to? Sit back and relax on this refurbished train, go out on the viewing platform, enjoy a drink, listen to the interesting narrative by a local guide who is also available to answer any questions. As with a previous reviewer, we booked seats in a first class car but did not realize that buffet lunch was included. It looked good. Beverages extra. This is not a loop but apx. 2 hrs. out then the train is reversed, but the canyon offers such spectacular views that the time goes quickly and you are bound to see things you missed on the outbound trip. Take your camera!
