Owner description: Verde Canyon Railroad is a Southwestern adventure that takes passengers on a ride through Arizona’s backcountry, only accessible from the comfort of this train. This legendary “boutique” attraction allows members of groups an uncommon view of a wildly-wonderful red-rock canyon. The four-hour excursion requires no laborious effort or exertion except by the highly-trained staff who absolutely love what they do. As evidenced by exceedingly positive reviews, they do it very well. Verde Canyon Railroad is the only excursion train in the Southwest which offers every guest two seats for the price of one: inside viewing through large panoramic windows in all coaches and 360-degree views from open-air viewing cars attached to each coach. As the train passes “through” a grand canyon, both vantages celebrate incomparable scenery, high-desert flora and fauna, historic trestles, dramatic geology, unusual rock formations and passage through a century-old 680-foot tunnel. Throughout the journey the captivating history of the Verde Canyon and the Railroad unfolds with narration interlaced with a wide genre of popular railroad tunes.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access, Food available for purchase, Bathroom facilities

We thoroughly enjoyed our ride through the "Little Grand Canyon". The scenery was beautiful. The narration was great at pointing out interesting objects to view. We purchased tickets for the first class car, and we're glad we did. There was a full bar to purchase drinks, and free appetizers. The seating is arranged in groups of two or four seats around a table. The coach cars are like a bus. All have access to the open air cars for unabstructed views. It is four hours to go up and back on the same track. Since there were no assigned seats, I would recommend getting there early.

The train ride is 4 hours. 2 hours to Perkinsville and 2 hours back. As the engine moves from the front to the back for the return trip you get the same view both times. The trip back is a little long. We took first class and it was well worth the $20 extra. A snack consisting of chicken wings, salad, sandwiches, cheese tray and a vegetable tray is included in the price. The price of alcoholic beverages is reasonable. The car attendant was very knowledgeable and provided first class service. The scenery was interesting but as this was February the trees were bare and dull.

The only way to take this ride and enjoy it is by going first class. Since it was Valentine's Day, we opted for the Chocolate Delight special. The 2 hour ride is one-way from Cottonwood to Perkinsville winding its way along the Verde Canyon. It comes back exactly the same way so 4 hours in total. The free snacks on board the first class section consist of salads, sandwiches, veggies and dip, chicken wings, chips, pretzels, and in our case, lots of chocolate goodies. Bar prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly and courteous. The tour is narrated and in between the narration, they play many "train" tunes. It's fun and a great way to spend some time when you are visiting the Sedona area.

We went on the Verde Canyon Railroad for the second time. We are retirement age and I found the regular class trip not as enjoyable as the last time when we went first class. The outside car was very crowded and someone deliberately sprayed a coke into the wind so it blew back on to the rest of the passengers. Some rowdy kids idea of fun.
What I did love about this trip was the bald eagle sightings. We saw seven altogether both flying and perched in trees or on the ground. That was a real thrill.
We took a lunch and had a pleasant picnic table to sit at while we ate before the train ride. The rest rooms in the depot were very nice. We would certainly go again and take out of town visitors or anyone who enjoys trains. The train staff was on alert for eagles and gave announcements every time there was a sighting so everyone would have a chance to see them.

During a Nov 2012 vacation we wanted to see more of Northern Arizona than what we could see from the roads. Since we're not hikers we were looking for an alternative. We found it in the Verde Canyon Railroad. We opted for the first class tickets with more comfortable seats, a bar and a nice selection of complimentary food. We also had an outdoor open car behind our car where we could get some fresh air, take pictures and get a better feel for the environs, which were spectacular. Along with the Blazin M Ranch it was one of our favorite activities during that vacation. It's worth the splurge.
