Owner description: Verde Canyon Railroad is a Southwestern adventure that takes passengers on a ride through Arizona’s backcountry, only accessible from the comfort of this train. This legendary “boutique” attraction allows members of groups an uncommon view of a wildly-wonderful red-rock canyon. The four-hour excursion requires no laborious effort or exertion except by the highly-trained staff who absolutely love what they do. As evidenced by exceedingly positive reviews, they do it very well. Verde Canyon Railroad is the only excursion train in the Southwest which offers every guest two seats for the price of one: inside viewing through large panoramic windows in all coaches and 360-degree views from open-air viewing cars attached to each coach. As the train passes “through” a grand canyon, both vantages celebrate incomparable scenery, high-desert flora and fauna, historic trestles, dramatic geology, unusual rock formations and passage through a century-old 680-foot tunnel. Throughout the journey the captivating history of the Verde Canyon and the Railroad unfolds with narration interlaced with a wide genre of popular railroad tunes.

This 4 hour train ride takes you through beautiful, scenic Verde Canyon. We were in the first class car. Our hostess was very friendly and made the trip even more enjoyable. As another review stated, the narration was hard to hear at times - and out of sync with the train, but our hostess was great at pointing out features as we passed them. We spent a lot of our time outside which I really enjoyed. The snacks provided were okay if you liked that sort of food - my husband does and I don't. The bar service - which was extra - was okay. I would recommend this for anyone wanting a relaxing afternoon viewing great landscapes.

We found the Verde Canyon Railroad on TripAdvisor and weren't disappointed. The guides were very knowledgable about the entire valley and the staff was very attentive. Circe (our server) was fun and had a great entertaining attitude. I thought this was going to be a rough ride but the 10 - 12 MPH speed was very smooth and relaxing. Excellent vistas and views (take your camera); get a seat on the right side of the trains for the best views.

Beautiful scenery, and wonderfully restored rail cars make this a great opportunity. Being a professional Tour Guide and Interpreter, I was really amazed that they had a very outdated audio system in the train and even standing right next to the speakers, you could barely hear the narration. When we went on the outdoor car, there was a live guide. He barely spoke, and when he did, it was some of the few times the music on the speakers stopped and the recording is actually saying something. This is a very successful operation, in spite of them selves producing a very low quality tour. As I said at the beginning , the scenery is awesome. Too bad they have not taken advantage of the captive audience and made a better program.

A few people recommended this train ride to us. It's not really anything too special, unless you haven't been exposed to the red rock area by car or hiking. It's a 4 hour ride.

If you do take this train, please do not waste your money on 'first-class'. We did first-class which included appetizers - if you call a platter of veggie sticks, a few chicken wings and some potato chips first-class food, then you'll be satisfied. They announced they'll be handing out ice cream sandwiches half-way during the trip but they charged $1 each. The recorded narration was very hard to hear unless you were sitting right under the speaker, which we weren't, so we missed 80% of the narration.

The scenery is lovely but no wildlife was seen at all, which we heard later was typical because the wildlife are not out during the daytime.

So I'm not sure why people recommend this train ride. I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't.

If you want to enjoy a laid-back afternoon of scenic beauty, this is the trip for you! Be sure to make a reservation well in advance, and if you can, pay a little extra for a First Class car ... it's well worth it. Nice accommodations, friendly staff, tasty food (included) and a full bar. The Verde Valley is so scenic, and they tell you when you're coming up on a good photo-op so that you can walk out onto an open-air car and click away. This is not a fast train -- it takes a very leisurely jaunt through a very pretty part of the state. We had a wonderful time! You will, too!
