“Great Historic Hotel”
Reviewed May 23, 2014

We had a great experience at the Hotel Viking! The hotel is listed as one of the Historic Hotels of America, but they have gone to great lengths to make updates and renovations. The bathrooms are small but beautiful. The beds were great! We did have to pay for parking ($17 in the off season), which is never very fun, but it's part of the charm of New England. There was also a restaurant in the hotel, which - of course - means that there is no complimentary breakfast. This hotel isn't on the coast, but it's pretty close to everything in Newport. I would definitely stay there again!

My husband and I just returned from a lovely weekend in Newport and I will say The Hotel Viking has some very nice attributes, however, for the price I am looking for more. We had a King sized comfortable bed, but not the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The room was large enough and and very pretty as well as clean but a very disappointing bathroom. No extras such as cotton balls, q-tips or shower cap. The shampoo, body wash and conditioner are dispensed from pumps mounted on the shower wall, so who knows what brand, kind, etc. And the tub has the old tiles, clearly not refurbished. No bathroom rug, just the tub bathmat. The general cleanliness of the lobby and sitting areas was just ok, I never saw anyone fluffing the pillows on the couches or wiping down the side and coffee tables and they truly needed some attention. We used the workout room twice, again, just ok, all the machines worked, plenty of free weights, but just two very old mats with rips on the corners and stuffing popping out. Breakfast was included with our package and we got the breakfast buffet both mornings. What was served was good, but very basic, certainly nothing to get very excited about. Lovely waitresses both mornings, could not have been more gracious and the coffee is excellent. The staff was friendly enough, but again, for the price we paid I would like more than just ok. We will not return, so many other places to try in Newport.

We are appreciative of reading reviews that reflect our guest service and our lovely décor. We did not measure up to the guest expectations and for this we do apologize. We are always learning and always working diligently to improve in every area that needs it. The “not so” pleasant reviews really do make us look long and hard on how to do better.

Stayed here two nights last week. I checked in with my vehicle undamaged and parked it in the valet. When I checked out on Sunday I drove home to New Jersey and while unpacking discovered my rear bumper was scratched and dented. I called Hotel Viking Sunday as soon as I noticed and got a call back 2 days later from management stating they would not be covering it because I did not report it as I was leaving. Sorry I didn't notice it until I got home. Also ended up paying $34 a night for parking. I guess the lot is either not secured or just poor parking by the valet. I expect a lot more from a place I dropped close to $800 for a 2 night stay. Don't waste your time here. I'll post pictures of the damage bumper if anyone is interested. Thanks for the damage Hotel Viking.

In regards to the room, thin walls and ceilings. I heard the people upstairs anytime they moved and they moved a lot.

Room Tip: Stay in Middletown or Jamestown and drive over to Newport.

This hotel was a bit of a disappointment in terms of value for money. We paid a very high rate, which may have had to do with being a busy weekend. It was definitely not worth it (unless you get a good deal, as it is an ok option). The hotel is in a good location, walking distance from the seafront but a bit out of he way. The building is pretty and clean, but our room (king size) was less than impressive. The ceilings were very low and there was little light. The bathroom, although adequate, was tiny. The best thing was the bed, which was great. The elevator took a long time because there is only one for many rooms.
Breakfast is just ok, nothing special. The buffet was definitely not up to the standards of the price paid for it. Service was adequate, however. All in all, next time I come back to Newport I will stay somewhere else.

It is always such a disappointment to all of us at the Hotel Viking when our guests are not happy with their stay. We do agree that we have a great location and a beautiful property. We are extremely dismayed, however, to read about your dissatisfaction with our charges. Although these charges are in keeping with our competitors’ fees for services. We are sorry you may not want to stay again at the hotel when you return to Newport.

Recently stayed at the Hotel Viking for a midweek anniversary getaway. The hotel is in walking distance to downtown shopping and bars. The rooms are on the small side but the beautiful shower in the bathroom is worth it!!!
The only downside was the parking. Since you really can't find street parking on Bellevue you need to use the valet parking at the hotel. I was surprised you had to pay to park at the hotel since a lot of other hotels in the area offer free parking.

Congratulations on your recent wedding anniversary that you and your husband were able to celebrate and enjoy with all of us at the Hotel Viking. Our staff does take great pride in doing their very best to work at having a spotless hotel which takes constant work. Parking in Newport is always difficult, and does cost to park. We try to make it as easy as possible for our guests during their stay and our rates are fair and equitable and competitive with the going rate. Our parking fee is within the range of competitive hotels in the area.

We loved Hotel Viking! We traveled off-season so we got a great deal, and even got a comp upgrade at check-in. Loved the boutique hotel decor. We had one dinner at the restaurant and I've never had better New England Clam Chowder. We were the only ones in the restaurant so was a bit worried that service would be slow but our waitress was fantastic and very attentive. Great stay!

Thank you for your wonderful comments. It is great that you were able to take advantage of our deals. We offer great package deals throught out the year. One Bellevue is also a hidden treasure here in Newport. Chef Kevin Thiele is totally dedicated and committed to the restaurant being the “best around”.

We stayed here for family get together. The Valet and bell hops are top notch! They do many other things in the hotel to help out and are super friendly! The Hotel presents well at first with the staff and appearance. After staying a couple nights you start to notice some flaws for what is considered to be an upscale Hotel.

The rooms are nice and clean but our shower we had some black mold in the cracks of the grout of the tiles. This could have easily been avoided by housekeeping cleaning/bleaching on a regular basis but it seemed to be neglected.

Our pillow cases were badly stained (although CLEAN) with coffee stains. The front desk did provide fresh ones when we asked. The sinks in all 3 rooms we had were terrible. They look fancy ( bowl sinks) but splatter water everywhere and the faucet was so close to the bottom of the sink that it was hard to get your hands under it. Decor was pretty though and in good shape. BEDS ARE SUPER COMFORTABLE! (Sterns and Foster Luxury Plush Mattress)

The Viking also provides a car service free of charge from the hotel to town. Town is very close though and you can walk it. When we called for a ride back from a town the front desk manager said it would be a 15 -20 min wait. That was reasonable. But after 20 minutes they didnt show up so we called to check on our ride back. The front desk manager ( a female) was very rude to us and stated that because we were calling back to complain that our ride was'nt there yet she would NOT provide us with another estimated time. She said the the driver would call us when he was there. We had asked very politely about the where a bouts of our ride and her snippy comment was not warranted! This left us waiting indefinitely to get back to out hotel after a late night dinner and long day!

The restaurant manager and staff are very nice. Food at the restaurant is fair. Some dishes were better than others. During breakfast one of my blueberry pancakes was RAW in the middle. They offered to cook me another one but since they weren't that good, I had enough. They were really dry.
Overall, it was a good stay but for the price the flaws that they had should not exist.

Room Tip: Chose the top floor so no one is stomping above you.

As we all read your opening comments we were happy to see you enjoyed the hotel and your room. Continuing on we were shocked and dismayed that your visit was marred by several issues. We always look into any issues that are brought to our attention by guests and do our best to remedy the situations that occur. We really do hope you will give us another chance.
