I had stayed in the Hotel Viking years before and had a much more pleasant experience. The memory of that experience made me decide to book this hotel and stay there on October 27, 2013. This is clearly the off-season in Newport. That being said the $35.00 car charge was not acceptable and I was able to find on the street parking. I booked this hotel on booking.com and found a reasonable rate. Our room was tiny. The bathroom barely fit one person and we are not usually crowded for space. The bedding was nice, and the the staff was great which made the experience pleasant, and we were only staying a few hours. Had we planned on the weekend it would have been completely unacceptable. It is a great location, walking distance to every attraction, possibly talk to the very nice staff and see if larger rooms are available.

Thank you for your review. The Hotel Viking is a historic property in a great location with accessibility to enjoying all that the City of Newport has to offer. We are considered to be a unique boutique 86 year old hotel with wonderful ambience, charm and a chance to look at what it was like to live in the 1920’s. We are able to offer the latest updated amenities yet keep that antiquated charm. Overall you just were not pleased with your accommodations and we apologize for that .

We traveled to Newport for a long weekend (Thursday to Monday) for our anniversary. We have a hotel in Newport that we typically stay in and love, but it was booked for Saturday night, so we turned to the Hotel Viking for the second part of our stay. The rates, while expensive, were reasonable compared to other nice hotels in the area. Let's start with the good: we were pleased throughout our stay with the help and courtesy of the valets, and the breakfast at One Bellevue was decent. Now to the bad: when we booked we reserved a King room with a fireplace, and upon arrival confirmed with the front desk staff that our room had a fireplace before going up to our room. Upon arriving in our room it was quite evident that the room did NOT have a fireplace. We immediately called and asked to be moved to a room with a fireplace, as promised - they said they were full and could move us the following day. Unacceptable, but they said they were sold out and there was nothing they could do. There was also no hotel manager on staff (on a Saturday evening) to speak with, so there was literally NOTHING they could do to remedy the situation until the following day (Sunday). On top of it, the front desk staff were flat out rude to my husband over the phone. Put an absolutely HORRIBLE taste in our mouthes about the hotel from the minute we arrived. Next, the bathroom was not fully cleaned. The sink and faucet handles were sticky and had a visible film on them. I called the front desk and asked if they could please send someone up to clean the room while we were out at dinner, and they said that they would. We returned to our room 2 hours later to find that in fact they never sent anyone and our bathroom was still dirty. I cleaned it myself. The next morning we spoke with the hotel manager, Monique, who offered to remedy the situation by moving us for our second night's stay, blamed the rooming mix-up on the woman who checked us in-she was new and in training (we later checked her business card that she gave us upon check-in stating she was the "Front Desk Supervisor" so that was a straight up lie from Monique), and just said "that isn't the way we operate" when we told her about the dirty bathroom and the lack of cleaning that occurred when we requested it. All in all, it's a big hotel with a lot of amenities, in a decent location, with terrible service. We give it 2 stars because the valets were very nice and helpful, and the waitresses during breakfast were nice. We will never go back and will never recommend the hotel to anyone else.

Our worst fears are when nothing seems to go right for a guest that stays at the Hotel Viking. Our hotel management team is always extremely concerned and upset when guests have a totally unpleasant experience from the time they arrive until the time they check out. And, unfortunately words cannot change how your experience reflects this. All we can say is we are sorry we could not live up to your expectations from the décor to the noise from the room next door that kept you awake.

Good location and nice hotel but we had an iPad and some cash stolen from our room while we were walking around downtown in the afternoon. The hotel manager said that she couldn't prove it was one of her staff so we had to file a police report and pay in full for the rooms. A more sincere effort on behalf of the hotel would have been appreciated.

Been to this hotel twice for a work meeting. The rooms are nicely furnished. The first year my room was on the ground floor, which is really not fully above ground. The windows were small making the room overall very dark. The location of the hotel is very convenient. It is off the beaten path, away from the water where most of the hotels in Newport are. It's still close enough to walk everywhere though. In the summer, it is a nice stroll from the Mansions. In any season, it's convenient to walk to the waterfront area for dinner or shopping. I had a lot of dealings with the staff due to a work assignment and they were always very courteous. The restaurant is overpriced, but the food is tasty. The hotel has a nice gym and a swimming pool with a hot tub. It had a courtyard in the middle which makes it confusing to navigate in the colder months. Overall, we have always enjoyed our stay at the Viking and will return again.

Its not on the water - a bit away from the harbor, but a 5-10 minute walk. Great staff - prompt and responsive.
Excellent restaurant, and there are many others nearby.
The older wing is historic - spent one stay there.
But the newer wing in more spacious and nicer.
Parking at 30 USD is expensive, but overall - Newport is expensive. Its a great place to stay, refresh and feel like its a good experience.
Recommended.

Room Tip: New wing has better rooms, old wing has historic ones.

Love this hotel very plush and beautiful rooms. Staff really wanted to ensure you enjoyed
your stay and nothing was too much trouble. It is much larger than it looks from the outside so be aware there can be long walks involved. But its worth it

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near ice makers they were very noisy and you could here them from a long way away

We stayed at this hotel for one night. We were surprised by how courteous the valet drivers were. The front desk staff was very helpful for dinner suggestions in our price range. I felt like I was in Disney World by how nice everyone was. The buffet breakfast included in our package was fabulous. I would stay here again if I came back to Newport.
