Samuel Durfee House
Ranked #8 of 96 Newport B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 18, 2013

Every year, we try to spend our anniversary someplace special. Some years we succeed and some years, well not so much. This year, we decided to stay fairly close to home (well, along the eastern seaboard anyway) and since we've never been, chose Newport RI to spend a few days. After hours of research, we decided to book three nights at The Samuel Durfee House as the idea of staying in a 200+ year old house greatly appealed and the reviews of the inn were excellent. I'm happy to say that this B&B went way beyond the category of "special." The inn has private, off street parking and is situated within walking distance of everything. We stayed in the Ida Lewis room which was spotless upon check-in and at our return every afternoon. The room has a private deck (which we took advantage of as the mid-October weather was really cooperative), a modern bathroom (with all the amenities - check out the locally made soap) and a fabulously high, comfortable bed (even the pillows get high praise). The building itself was really fascinating - with all of the quirky perks of a house that age. Breakfast was amazing and plentiful - every single morning. We didn't feel the need to eat lunch once in three days while out roaming around the mansions, shopping in town or walking along Cliff Walk - but we never passed up the freshly baked cookies served every afternoon in the sitting room. What really made our stay extra special, though, were innkeepers Michael and Heather, who consistently pointed us in the right direction regarding things to see, places to eat dinner and the easiest ways to get around. They patiently answered all of our questions regarding their home, its history and its upkeep (and we had quite a few of those!) and by the time we left, we felt like we were saying goodbye to old friends. This is a great place to stay in Newport!!

Room Tip: We peeked into a couple of the other rooms - honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. We t...

We stayed in the Harrison suite for two nights and it was just lovely. The decor and furnishings were beautiful and the bed was extremely comfortable. Samuel Durfee House is situated in an ideal position within a short walking distance to the shopping and restaurant area of Newport. The two breakfasts we had were delicious, consisting of fruit juice, fresh fruit, omelettes and french toast. You couldn't want for any better. We didn't meet Michael or Jaxson but we would both like to thank Heather for making us feel so welcome and for making our stay in Newport so memorable.

This is my second time at the Samuel Durfee House. I wanted to bring my husband so we came for our anniversary this year. Michael and Heather are wonderful hosts and everything one could ever want is provided. Coffee and tea are always available as are cookies and cake and Michael and Heather helped to decide which houses to visit and on which boat to sail! The rooms are very comfortable and spotlessly clean and at night one could hear a pin drop. We stayed in the Jackie O room which is small but perfectly appointed and very pretty and at the back of the house.

My husband and I just got back from staying at the Samuel Duffee house. We stayed in the
Ida Lewis room. This was our first time staying at a B&B. We got the recommendations from a friend and could not be happier. We loved the Samuel Duffee house. Heather and Michael are very nice hosts. Their house is clean and adorable. We loved our room too. The house is in the perfect location..walking distance to just about everything.
The breakfast they make is amazing. Heather was so nice to show us what the hot spots to see and detail about each mansion. When we arrived, they had an anniversary cupcakes for us. It was a really sweet touch. We loved Newport and loved Samuel Duffee house. We will be back.

Perfect B&B! Friendly hosts, excellent breakfasts, clean, cozy comfortable rooms and you can walk to all from this location. We stayed in the Durfee room which was a spacious room with a high bed (you will need to use the step stool). This was a quiet, pretty room at the front of the house, 2nd floor, where we were also able to get a little bit of a view of the harbor. Will definitely stay here again!

My husband and I recently spent the weekend in Newport, staying at the Samuel Durfee House. Our room (Perry) was simple and cozy, and very clean. Heather was such a lovely host, and even baked gluten free cookies one day because I have a gluten allergy. Breakfasts were delicious too. The house is in a great location right by all the restaurants and shops, but on a quieter street. Highly recommend staying here for a relaxing weekend.

Room Tip: We stayed in Perry, and even being in the front of the house it was still very quiet.
