Every year, we try to spend our anniversary someplace special. Some years we succeed and some years, well not so much. This year, we decided to stay fairly close to home (well, along the eastern seaboard anyway) and since we've never been, chose Newport RI to spend a few days. After hours of research, we decided to book three nights at The Samuel Durfee House as the idea of staying in a 200+ year old house greatly appealed and the reviews of the inn were excellent. I'm happy to say that this B&B went way beyond the category of "special." The inn has private, off street parking and is situated within walking distance of everything. We stayed in the Ida Lewis room which was spotless upon check-in and at our return every afternoon. The room has a private deck (which we took advantage of as the mid-October weather was really cooperative), a modern bathroom (with all the amenities - check out the locally made soap) and a fabulously high, comfortable bed (even the pillows get high praise). The building itself was really fascinating - with all of the quirky perks of a house that age. Breakfast was amazing and plentiful - every single morning. We didn't feel the need to eat lunch once in three days while out roaming around the mansions, shopping in town or walking along Cliff Walk - but we never passed up the freshly baked cookies served every afternoon in the sitting room. What really made our stay extra special, though, were innkeepers Michael and Heather, who consistently pointed us in the right direction regarding things to see, places to eat dinner and the easiest ways to get around. They patiently answered all of our questions regarding their home, its history and its upkeep (and we had quite a few of those!) and by the time we left, we felt like we were saying goodbye to old friends. This is a great place to stay in Newport!!
