It was our first experience at a B&B and it was just we hoped for. Our hosts were welcoming and were there for anything we could possibly need including great recommendations for lunch and dinner.
The breakfasts were outstanding!
We would go back if we are in the area again for sure.
Thank you Heather and Michael!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Doris Duke room in the back of the house. Very comfortable, quiet and spotless.

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend recently and found everything to be fabulous. The room (Perry) was very comfortable, clean and attractive. Michael and Heather were the perfect hosts; both were extremely personable and accommodating. They really seem to care about their guests. Breakfast was wonderful all 3 mornings. The location was perfect too - walking distance to everything.

You can't go wrong with this B&B for your stay in Newport. The location alone is worth it, as you are an easy walk to both the wharf area and the tennis hall of fame. It is also very easy to take the quick drive to the cliff walk and the mansions. It's not so much in the middle of everything, as it is adjascent to the middle, which is exactly what we look for.

The breakfasts are stellar (and vary every day, alternating sweet and savory, mmmmm). It's also plenty of food (enough so you don't really need to buy lunch, which is a plus). Michael makes the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had, and he very obviously enjoys cooking. Heather and Michael come out and chat and they are easy to get along with and have fantastic recommendations for all types of people. Foodie Side Note: Michael IS a foodie and will be able to help you get where you want to go.

Accomodations were very nice as well. Obviously the rooms are older, but they have been kept up very well and the shower/toilet/sink all worked perfectly (which is always my concern with older inns). The room we stayed in (Hamilton) had a private entrance and courtyard (if only it hadn't rained all week), and a small sitting room for TV-watching - both of which were greatly appreciated. Also an HDTV and free wifi are great additions.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Hamilton Room and didn't get a chance to see the others. Hamilton has a stand u...

My husband and I stayed here from June 22-24, and had a really nice time. I can't think of anything that Heather and Michael could improve on, so I'll just give you a list of what we liked:

-location. Quiet, but very close to everything. One mile walk from the cliff walk (this was really enjoyable b/c you can see so much of Newport on the way to the cliff walk).
-breakfast: DELICIOUS. French toast on Portuguese bread with sausage one morning, crepe eggs benedict with bacon and homefries another. Both mornings, yummy coffee cake and fruit to start with.
-room: spacious, well-appointed, very quiet. We were in the Doris Duke room. Oh and my husband's favorite... central air!! The bathroom had just be renovated and was really nice (lots of storage if you need it!)
-price: It was comparable, but a bit less expensive than the other B&B's we were considering (some of which we drove/ walked by, and we definitely preferred Samuel Durfee House's location).
-Heather & Michael: Both very nice and very helpful/ knowledgable. Excellent cook/bakers!

Have already recommended this B&B to friends.

The reason travelers pick a B&B is to have a travel experience that fundamentally differs from the typical tourist hotel. We look for warm, knowledgeable, caring hosts who go the extra mile to ensure that our stay is perfect. We look for intimate, comfortable, and well appointed accommodations that reflect the personal style of the owner and match the ambiance and history of the area. We look for a culinary experience far beyond that of the typical hotel dining room. In every regard, Michael and Heather exceeded our expectations and created a truly memorable travel experience. Their recommendations for dining, shopping, attractions, and local flavor were perfectly matched to our needs. The breakfasts were truly outstanding and the location was within easy walking distance of everything. We especially appreciated being allowed to park our car for the rest of the day so we could enjoy Newport for a little longer. We will definitely return in the fall.

Room Tip: The 4 poster bed is easily accessible by using the step stool provided. Wireless internet was good.

I really cannot recommend the Samuel Durfee highly enough and would definitely stay here again, should I visit Newport in future.

I stayed here for 2 nights as part of a 10-day trip travelling around the East coast and of all of the hotels I stayed at during my holiday, the Samuel Durfee was easily the best hotel. And the best value!!

The breakfast cooked by Michael every morning was absolutely delicious and so filling, I could skip lunch every day.

I had a lovely, impeccably clean room with a huge bed and the best mattress I have slept on in years. My room was situated at the back of the house and so quiet I didn't hear anything at all. Not a sound from the other guest rooms (even though the b&b was fully booked) and nothing from the outside. So I'd particularly recommend the Samuel Durfee for light sleepers.

Best of all Heather and Michael somehow managed to create a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere while at the same time offering top-notch service.

During my 2-day stay it rained continuously and potentially I could have had a miserable time in Newport. However, visiting the mansions all-day and then coming back to this gem of a b&b really made me forget the awful weather completely.

Room Tip: Stayed in the Doris Duke room at the back of the house. Very quiet with a beautiful bathroom
