“Armistead Cottage very SPECIAL experience”
Reviewed July 29, 2007

My husband and I hadn't been in Newport in years and had the most delightful time. A large part of the experience was our visit to Armistead. Our host and hostess were so pleasant and we felt very much at home. The breakfasts were delicious and beautifully presented. The other guests were very engaging and interesting. Our host and hostess are real "foodies" and we had great conversations about restaurants both in Newport and in New York. A lovely visit and we highly recommend it!

We hate to be negative, but since we always rely on Trip Advisor's reviews for choosing our B&B we feel as if we have to tell what our stay was like.. First, I'll start with the positives. This B&B was spotless! And the location is in a very quiet neighborhood close to Cliff walk, and it is also walkable (although a bit far in the heat of the day) to the wharf area. Now for the negatives. When we first arrived, we were told by Ramona that she was not a morning person and not to expect breakfast until 9 o'clock. Most B&B's will advise when breakfast is served but coffee and juice are available earlier and cereals are provided if you want to leave early to explore your vacation spot.. After having to wait for Ramona to get up, the food was terrible even though she told us she only cooked "gourmet". The main entree was 1egg that was over cooked, served with 1 piece each of toasted white bread-served without jams or jelly. It was supplemented with a small muffin and a small serving of fruit. She told us what she thought was a funny story about an elderly guest who arrived at the breakfast table on his second morning with a box of his own cereal. After the first breakfast that we had, the anecdotal story made perfect sense. And needless to say, we didn't stick around for breakfast number 2. The rooms contained no shampoo,conditioner or lotion-things that we hadn't packed since all other b&b's we have gone to provided these items. We had one small bar of soap, which we ran out of since we had to use it for shampoo, showers, etc. It was difficult to get more since Ramona had left for the day. I guess great b&b's are in the small touches, so not having napkins to go with our late afternoon glass of wine (we certainly were'nt going to buy them!) just added to our frustration.
Maybe this is a great b&b for weekends, but for our mid week visit, it left much to be desired.

We have stayed in a number of Newport inns and B&Bs, but Armistead Cottage is certainly the nicest. The house is beautifully furnished with antiques, and our room was spotless. We were in the Lilac room, which was very comfortable and well-appointed. Homemade cookies magically appeared each afternoon.

After long walks along the Newport shoreline, we were able to relax with complimentary beverages on the large porch swing.

Romana made us feel right at home and provided wonderful breakfasts with very creative selections. The french toast with wild blueberry syrup was particularly good.

We will definitely stay at Armistead Cottage again.

My boyfriend and I just got back from Newport, where we spent two nights at the Armistead Cottage. We couldn't had picked a better Bed & Breakfast. The house is beautiful, the room is lovely and the hosts are very friendly, helpful and accomodating. We definelly will return to the Armistead for our next weekend getaway in Newport!

My wife and I, and our long time friends booked two of the rooms at Romana's home for this year's Memorial Day weekend trip.
Our stay there was wonderful. Spotless clean, great breakfasts, and a friendly comfortable atmosphere. With the great weather, and the vibrant Newport experience, what more could we have hoped for? Paradiddle (Our regards to the good DR.)

We spent Memorial Day weekend at the Armistead Cottage. Short review? Absolutely delightful. Long review? Read on.

We were greeted at the door by lovely Romana, who quickly learned our names, our likes and dislikes, and also very graciously outlined the basics of our stay: breakfast is at 9 or 9:30, make sure the front door is always locked, and PLEASE mind that the kitties don't get out. From the first moment and for the full extent of our stay, we felt exactly like treasured houseguests.

Our rooms were lovely: spacious, impeccably clean, thoroughly comfortable, romantic. Husband and I stayed in the Victorian Room, and, as advertised, the bath is spick-and-span squeaky new. Great water pressure in the shower, for those of you (like us!) who care about such things. Could have used a shelf or table in there, though; I wound up leaving my "stuff" parked on the windowsills.

ATTENTION Sheraton People: it's a B&B, for G-d's sake, so forget your resort hotel expectations, but bring along your best houseguest manners. This B&B is located in a fine homey neighborhood; I sat on the front steps each morning drinking coffee with Romana's mom (who was visiting at the time), smoking (horrors!), chatting, and saying hello to the frequent dogwalkers who came by on the street. It's a remarkably QUIET neighborhood; I had the best sleep I've had in long time. This location is also perfectly convenient to the lively downtown-- -two minutes in the car and you're ready to look for a parking space in the jumpin' wharf scene.

The public rooms of this inn-- actually, ALL the rooms -- are filled with bibelots, each with a story. Everywhere you look there is something new to see. The "carrot museum" is a hoot.

Sample breakfast?

Broiled bananas with cinammon and butter;
homemade cranberry muffins;
zucchini frittata served with bacon and toast;
fresh OJ and endless coffee.

Romana is terrific. (We missed out on meeting Charles because he was away in NY). Lively, sharp, funny, authoritative on everything Newport, even a bit salty -- we loved Romana best of all.

Staying at Armistead Cottage was like staying at a good friend's home.

My husband and I stayed at the Armistead Cottage Memorial Day weekend of 2006 and again this past Memorial Day. We were engaged last year in Newport and went back again this past Memorial Day as a celebration! We have stayed in two different rooms at the Armistead Cottage and have loved our stay both times. It is a lovely, warm B&B and Romana and Charles go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay. They even were able to handle my food allergies. We feel like we are at home when we are at the Armistead. I read some great reviews at trip advisor and also read the negative review about the cat smell. We did not smell any cats and only smelled wonderful aromas from the kitchen throughout the day. I am allergic to cats and definitely would have noticed if the B&B wasn't fresh and clean. Overall, I would definitely recommend staying at the Armistead. The food is great and the owners are wonderful.
