I stayed at Armistead from June 30 - July 2 with my Girlfriend. The home is beautiful, immaculately clean and very welcoming. The rooms are spacious and have all the amenities you could want. Romana and her husband are an absolute pleasure to deal with, having an extremely light and funny demeanor about them. The breakfast prepared by Romana was absolutely delicious. They are full of useful suggestions of what to see, and are not in any way obtrusive or imposing. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great weekend getaway!

This was our first trip to Newport. We had originally planned to rent a condo, but when it didn't work out we found this adorable B&B. Our room was a good size for two people, (we had the Lilac Room) very clean and an overall nice space. We loved the decor of the home, and there were a lot of small personal touches. Romana takes great care of her home. She is amazing! Very funny and accommodating. She was great with recommendations for restaurants and attractions.

We loved the breakfast! It was something different and creative every day. The location of the Armistead Cottage is great! Very close the Cliff Walk and Bellevue Avenue/the Newport mansions.

We recently visited Armistead Cottage for probably our third time, and each time is more enjoyable then the last. This sounds corny, but Armistead is not your typical B&B experience.

Newport has a lot of B&Bs, and we've stayed at a number of others over the years. You can either choose a 'corporate' type B&B, where the innkeepers are employees and treat guests as customers, or you can choose to stay in a place where your hosts treat you as cherished guests in their home. Armistead is that type of place.

It may be small, but it is very well furnished. There is an overall theme to the house, and I'm not just referring to the Carrot Museum. This is not a bland charmless B&B with Thomas Kinkades on the walls(Horrors!)
It has it's quirks, but they add to the charm and appeal of the place.

Pros:
- Warm, welcoming hosts, genuinely interested in you and where you're from
- A very gourmet breakfast, not your typical breakfast fare, although you can make requests in advance for particular foods.
- An extremely clean, comfortable room. Our room had a TV with DVD player built in.
- WiFi throughout the Inn.
- A good neighborhood for walking, you can walk down to the beach causeway, or the start of the Cliff Walk from there.

Cons:
- Kitties. If you're allergic to cats this is maybe not the place for you. The kitties do stay out of your way though unless you are a cat person and then they may come and visit with you.
- If you want a quick and basic continental breakfast and out the door, the gourmet breakfast experience here may be more than you bargained for.
- Not really walking distance to downtown (Thames St, etc). But they do have offstreet parking here and there are often cheap places available to park closer to downtown.
- It is an older house, rooms are on the second floor, some floors are a little uneven/sloping.
- Not a good fit for families with young kids. Too many breakable things!
- Quiet at night, no fire engines, loud parties, etc that you often find in the downtown area. Actually, that is a Pro and not a Con!

In short, if you want to stay at a hotel with hotel amenities, try the downtown Marriott or Newport Harbor hotels. But if you want a real, quality B&B experience, Armistead Cottage can't be beat. We're already looking forward to our next trip to Newport.

And congratulations to Romana and Charles on being awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for 2012!

Well, coffee, really. We lucked out in our three-day stay in Newport twice, by staying at this cozy cottage on Hunter Street, and also hitting the beginning of the America's Cup World Series race. Our room was great, and hosts Romana and Charles were so friendly. We enjoyed three wonderful breakfasts, and I must add, Romana was very accommodating to my gluten allergy. Being pretty good walkers, the location was good for the Cliff Walk, the Wharfs, and the mansions on Bellvue. First time in Newport, but we'll definitely be back!

We were warmly greeted by Romana, shown the house and then our rooms, spotlessly clean and decorated with everything Victorian. Linens and coverlets were lovely and the 4-poster bed, draped in wisteria, was firm and comfortable. Room had two armchairs, large closet, TV, modern bathroom with tub and shower, lots of windows to open, and AC if needed.
Romana served a 3-course breakfast in the formal dining room, beautifully plated, and we even asked for her recipes. Gardens are gorgeous, and we had wine and snacks on the wide, breezy porch.
The carrot museum is quirky, and fun to explore. In the same room was a small guest fridge we used for our cheeses.
The reviewer who said the inn was gawdy/tacky is probably not comfortable with Victoriana decor. But he/she need't have been so cruel. This is a home the owners have opened to strangers. If you don't like someone's personal decor, stay in the Marriot.

One of our wedding gifts was a weekend stay in Newport, RI at the quaint, charming Armisted Cottage! We started by meeting the delightful host and hostess, Romana and Charles. We were shown around the house...what magnificent, interesting and exotic furnishings and antiques but the biggest fascination is Romana'a extensive (and I mean extensive) collection of carrots (in any format you can imagine from porcelain carrots to paintings of the orange vegetable)! I never did ask how many were in the collection.
Our room was the beautiful Lilac Room and we were given a number of ideas for sightseeing from our hosts. The location of Armisted Cottage is central to all attractions in Newport which is wonderful! We weary sightseers returned to a comfortable night in our room and we felt quite at home.! But the biggest surprise was the magnificent breakfast we were treated to the following morning; the meal was prepared with love and excellent culinary ability!!
We will be back!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: The Lilac Room is wonderful...it has a queen size bed!
