“...a venture back in history at Armistead Cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2012

One of our wedding gifts was a weekend stay in Newport, RI at the quaint, charming Armisted Cottage! We started by meeting the delightful host and hostess, Romana and Charles. We were shown around the house...what magnificent, interesting and exotic furnishings and antiques but the biggest fascination is Romana'a extensive (and I mean extensive) collection of carrots (in any format you can imagine from porcelain carrots to paintings of the orange vegetable)! I never did ask how many were in the collection.
Our room was the beautiful Lilac Room and we were given a number of ideas for sightseeing from our hosts. The location of Armisted Cottage is central to all attractions in Newport which is wonderful! We weary sightseers returned to a comfortable night in our room and we felt quite at home.! But the biggest surprise was the magnificent breakfast we were treated to the following morning; the meal was prepared with love and excellent culinary ability!!
We will be back!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: The Lilac Room is wonderful...it has a queen size bed!

it just keeps getting better-it is so nice to stay in a place that is really, really clean. The hosts are just the nicest people and she knows how to cook!!! All kidding aside, we can't say enough about this place. It is just so comfortable, affordable and convenient -that is why we keep coming back and it is just unbelievable how many carrots Romana has collected in her museum. To see it is to believe it -give it a try ,you will not regret it ,especially if your criteria is a good mattress, cleanliness, privacy and hospitality with Newport within walking distance

Room Tip: we take the Lilac room with a queen sized bed and private bath, maybe next time we will try the king...

“A delightful enchanting place to stay in Newport"

We spent a wonderful weekend in Newport at Armistead Cottage...and to accommodate us where / are wonderful hosts Romana and Charles. Each morning we had a quaint delicious breakfast and warm conversations. Armistead Cottage is within walking distance to the town, and all the activities / fun. It is flawlessly clean, captivating, and the rooms are so very cozy. The beds are so simply comfy with the big billowy pillows. I highly recommend Armistead Cottage not only for the ambiance but for the hospitality that Romana & Charles give, they truly make you feel like you welcomed and belong…I wound up leaving feeling like I made friends with two wonderful people that will last a life time.

Thank you Romona & Charles for your wonderful hospitality!

We just love going to Newport and for the past 5 or so years of us visiting the ocean, we have always stayed at the Armistead Cottage. The hospitality we receive from Romana and Charles, our hosts are what keeps us going back and back again. Romana is so full of interesting stories and tells us what is happening in Newport and wonderful restaurants to enjoy. The rooms and house are lovely, extremely clean and comfortable. Freshly made breakfasts are just delicious and very healthy for sure!!! She makes delicious muffins/breads and fruit dishes such as baked applies. We look forward to seeing Romana and Charles every time we return. The cottage is located in a quiet residential area but within walking distance from Cliff Walk and downtown Newport. We recommend this B&B very highly and if you plan to relax and enjoy what Newport has to offer, Armistead Cottage is your perfect cup of tea.

We spent a great couple of days in Newport at Armistead Cottage which is in a quieter area of Newport, yet still within walking distance to where the action is, and close to the coastal walk. The bed & breakfast is immaculately clean, spacious, and our bed was great. Romana & Charles, the hosts, made us feel very much at home, and it is clear that they are enjoying what they are doing. I guess this is also helped by the fact that they only have two rooms (as far as I recall), and, together with the home-made breakfast, this creates a familial atmosphere. We felt very much at ease, and it was lovely to chat with Romana & Charles. If you are looking to spend a few days in Newport and are pondering which bed & breakfast to go with, choose this one, you won't regret it! We'll definitely be back.

Armistead Cottage typifies what I think defines the experience of a bed and breakfast: a freshly made intimate breakfast, a feeling of home while traveling, and tchotchke galore.

Now these things may not be a person's cup of tea, but the Armistead pulls it off with great aplomb. The house is extremely clean, as are the rooms, and the little touches (cookies and chocolates in your room every day, for example) really round out the experience.

Romana makes everything herself with the added bonus of using ingredients from her garden (rhubarb! mint!). The Armistead only has 3 rooms and it can be a little awkward when having breakfast with your fellow housemates, but during our stay we met a fabulous couple who made breakfast enjoyable.

Our room overlooked the backyard and was extremely quiet replete with soothing water sounds from the yard's little fountain pond. The bed was very comfortable and there was even a tv which we didn't end up using with dvd's in the hallway.

The Armistead is not in the heart of Newport, but why bother when it's a beautiful and short scenic walk to the main drag? I much preferred staying somewhere that felt like a home away from home. Romana certainly helped in this effort and was very sweet and accommodating.
I did some research while in town and I can highly recommend Empire Tea and Coffee (they have a big lite-brite TABLE! and great coffee!), Thames Street Kitchen, and Rosemary and Thyme Boulangerie- and obviously the cliff walk and driving along Ocean Drive.

Bring your sense of humor, whimsy, and community, and you will love it at the Armistead. Enjoy!

We stayed at the Armistead cottage on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This was our first time in Newport. The cottage is located at a quiet residential area but still within walking distance from the Cliff Walk and the Historic Center. We immediately felt welcome and part of the family. Literally. Romana is a wonderful hostess, completely genuine and unpretentious, with a great sense of humor and a passion for... everything! Newport, carrots, antiques, cats, Venice, life in general! Charles is equally warm and engaging!
Their home was immaculate; sparkling clean and very tastefully decorated with artwork pieces, yet very warm and comfortable. Our room was the Victorian Room (the one with the king size bed). The bed was very comfortable, the room was quiet, large and very inviting. Our breakfast was very good. Romana bakes wonderful muffins! A tip: take Romana's advice for the Cliff Walk and mansions and don't hesitate to ask her for more site seeing ideas. We owe her our great Newport experience!
We will definitely go back again!
