I picked Vanderbilt Hall for its waterfront Newport location. My wife and I had four nights to relax in Newport and planned to daysail at Sail Newport over at Fort Adams Park until Hurricane Bill made a 22 foot J boat seem overmatched. So we took instead a 70 foot 12 meter sailboat ride and a trip on the schooner Aquidneck. I got great pictures of the wife sailing both ships in some gorgeous weather out on Narragansett Bay. When we needed to slow down the Vanderbilt was our home away from home. Others have commented on the feeling of having an apartment instead of a room. We concur. We had brought wine and liquor with us and got pleasantly buzzed up on the roof deck and out back in the charming patio garden. I bought drinks at the bar and noticed they were fairly priced. The bar itself is a wow. On the weekend a guitarist-singer set up on the patio and provided dinner entertainment. My wife loves her morning exercise workouts and appreciated that the pool is in the lower part of the hotel next to the small workout and sauna area. We noticed rooms downstairs for everything from corporate meetings to private massage. I can only imagine how lovely it would be to hold a function at the Vanderbilt. The bar and restaurant were somewhat underused during our stay as I suppose many guests were leary of hotel food when surrounded by the riches of Newport's restaurant mecca reputation. That was probably our loss as several of the local restaurants while highly rated simply did not impress and yet the hotel provided meals which looked absolutely first rate for those guests we saw enjoying them. Next time we won't outsource every meal but will give the hotel a chance to make our stay even less stressful by using their dining facilites. In case you haven't heard, Newport is simply too jammed for cars in the season. We got stuck in one traffic foulup so bad they should have simply said "road closed." Here is where a walking distance hotel like the Vanderbilt really pays off. The waterfront is touristy to the max but so what? There really are fun things to do along Thames Street and I can't think of a better hotel in the entire city from which to plan your trip. In short we loved every minute of our stay at the Vanderbilt. Oh and before I forget, a big thank you to the all ways helpful young staff. They made us love coming downstairs and really took our needs to heart. Absolutely super.
