I picked Vanderbilt Hall for its waterfront Newport location. My wife and I had four nights to relax in Newport and planned to daysail at Sail Newport over at Fort Adams Park until Hurricane Bill made a 22 foot J boat seem overmatched. So we took instead a 70 foot 12 meter sailboat ride and a trip on the schooner Aquidneck. I got great pictures of the wife sailing both ships in some gorgeous weather out on Narragansett Bay. When we needed to slow down the Vanderbilt was our home away from home. Others have commented on the feeling of having an apartment instead of a room. We concur. We had brought wine and liquor with us and got pleasantly buzzed up on the roof deck and out back in the charming patio garden. I bought drinks at the bar and noticed they were fairly priced. The bar itself is a wow. On the weekend a guitarist-singer set up on the patio and provided dinner entertainment. My wife loves her morning exercise workouts and appreciated that the pool is in the lower part of the hotel next to the small workout and sauna area. We noticed rooms downstairs for everything from corporate meetings to private massage. I can only imagine how lovely it would be to hold a function at the Vanderbilt. The bar and restaurant were somewhat underused during our stay as I suppose many guests were leary of hotel food when surrounded by the riches of Newport's restaurant mecca reputation. That was probably our loss as several of the local restaurants while highly rated simply did not impress and yet the hotel provided meals which looked absolutely first rate for those guests we saw enjoying them. Next time we won't outsource every meal but will give the hotel a chance to make our stay even less stressful by using their dining facilites. In case you haven't heard, Newport is simply too jammed for cars in the season. We got stuck in one traffic foulup so bad they should have simply said "road closed." Here is where a walking distance hotel like the Vanderbilt really pays off. The waterfront is touristy to the max but so what? There really are fun things to do along Thames Street and I can't think of a better hotel in the entire city from which to plan your trip. In short we loved every minute of our stay at the Vanderbilt. Oh and before I forget, a big thank you to the all ways helpful young staff. They made us love coming downstairs and really took our needs to heart. Absolutely super.

We really enjoyed our stay at Vanderbilt Hall -- if there were a 4.5 star option, we'd give it that: this is a handsome building, well-run, politely staffed, and warm and inviting. The small gym and pool are wonderful and the beautiful room where they serve a good if slightly under-portioned breakfast makes a great way to start the morning (despite the unusual erratic service at times). We absolutely loved our room and our incredibly comfortable bed, but it was slightly small, it seemed to us, for the price; also odd was the prevalence of "facial soap" only in the bathroom. Little oddities such as these are the only thing that detract from a wonderful stay. Note: while we didn't get to try the new restaurant as it wasn't open when we had booked our room (and so we booked other restaurants in Newport) the menu is among the most adventurous and promising in what is a pretty conservative fine-dining town.

I have stayed in lots of different hotels all over the world, and this place is quite special. It was like staying in a very nice apartment of a friend. We booked a Junior Suite ($375 per night during the week) and got a free upgrade to a Junior Deluxe Suite ($475 per night during the week). The room was gorgeous (very nice moldings, paint scheme, furniture, artwork, vases, books, LCD TVs, etc.). It was like an L shaped studio with a divider for the bedroom area. The ceilings were 14 feet with huge windows to match. It included a wet bar with a microwave and refrig. Included great closet with nice robes, ironing board and iron, hair dryer, safe, etc. The bathroom had a great two headed shower. It had a gym, pool, and sauna. Great roof deak, outdoor dining area, and sun room (that was too hot to use in August). Had breakfast in the room, which was ok. Didn't eat in restaurant. Location was very good as it was close to the "strip" but not too close that the noise would bother you. Nice on-site partking. When I go back to Newport, I will not look anyplace else for a room.

Some have complained that this place is not good for kids, that they don't have cots, etc. This is a nice hotel with nice decorations (like vases, paintings, and nice books) in the rooms. It is not set up for small children who could easily break things. Also, if you can't pony up the dough for a room for every two people in your party (i.e., you need a cot), don't stay here.

Recently, my wife and I visited Newport for one night and spent it at Vanderbilt Hall. Before booking the room, we had reviewed a number of reviews of similarly situated hotels in Newport and felt that Vanderbilt Hall offered exactly what we were looking for. While we were not let down with our accomodations, the City of Newport was not quite what we had expected. If you like T-shirt shops and fudge, Newport is the place for you. If you are looking for a quaint subdued New England city, look elsewhere unless of course you can buy a home along the coast on the road leading from mansion row. In any event, Vanderbilt Hall is not very impressive from the outside, but is quite charming within. In fact after reading the history of the hotel, I had learned that at one time it was a YMCA. Of course, that was probably close to 100 years ago and today, Vanderbilt Hall is a product of substantial renovations. The hotel has a bed and breakfast feel, yet offers the amenities of a hotel. Our room was a minisuite on the third floor and offered more than ample space for two people. The room was well appointed and most importantly very clean and well maintained. The double sided LCD televisions are a nice touch as are the Aveda products. If we had any complaint about the room, it was the rather small size of the bathroom and the limited lighting in the bedroom area. The hotel has a small roof top terrace from which you can view the harbor. Unfortunately for us, it was a gray and somewhat wet day. While we chose to eat dinner at one of the many restaurants along the piers, the hotel might have been a more attractive choice. However, if dinner was anything like the breakfast which came with our room, I would certainly go elsewhere. In fact the hotel would be better off not offering breakfast with the room. Purchasing a boxed mass produced coffee cake and a bag of Lenders bagels at a local supermarket would have been nicer than what was laid out in a mini buffet containing stale cakes, frozen bagels and packaged breakfast bars. I had read a review of a breakfast at another hotel where the guest indicated that the breakfast appeared to be like a spread from Costco-in the case of Vanderbilt Hall, that would have been nicer. Overall, I would highly recommend Vanderbilt Hall for its comfortable accomodations. However, plan on eating breakfast elsewhere.

My wife and I stayed at Vanderbilt Hall while in Newport to attend the wedding of a friend. The hotel has the feel of years of history, but is completely updated with every amenity you could want. The rooms are spacious, bathrooms completely modernized (with great dual shower heads), and the flat-screen TV was a nice touch. The staff was extremely pleasant, and professional while unintrusive. The hotel bar was lively on a weekend night, and the room service food was fantastic. Lastly, the location is perfect - off the main drag to avoid noise and commotion, but a short walk to the waterfront, shops and restaurants. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and will be staying there again when we go back.

Vanderbilt Hall is a must stay in Newport. I travel to Newport often from Boston and Vanderbilt Hall is the only place I stay. The hotel is in a perfect location within walking distance to everything Newport has to offer, shops, restaurants, nightlife, all within close proximity to the Vanderbilt.

The rooms at the Vanderbilt are luxurious, large and beautifully decorated. I have stayed in number of rooms and they all boast big bathrooms with a double shower head and aveda products, extermely comfortable beds, flat screen tvs, living areas complete with a couch, table, frig and ample sitting area. Rooms are immaculately clean, with turndown service offering nightly treats. The hotel also has a full bar, gym, pool and a nice outdoor area for relaxing. The staff is very friendly and helpful making a stay at Vanderbilt Hall a truly memorable experience. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, there is no better place to stay in Newport.
