I have lived in Rhode Island for most of my life and never heard of this precious museum. What a great find with a great collection of American illustrators work including Rockwell, his mentors and his contemporaries, all set in a beautiful mansion in Newport on Bellevue Avenue. Worth the trip. I wish they advertised more, but I will spread the word!

This was my 3rd visit to this museum and it does not disappoint! I am an artist and to see all these American illustrators together is wonderful. Taking the guided tour is a must if you want to hear all the stories. Plan for at least 2 hours or more. Huge collection in a beautiful Newport Mansion. Has convenient parking across the street. Take the time to treat yourself!

Living close to Newport you want to take advantage of local attractions when the crowds are few. This museum was way more than expected. the amount of illustrations is beyond what you imagine. The tour includes an iPad device with headphone so you can go at your own pace. There are many illustrations by Maxwell Parrish and Norman Rockwell. I have been to Stockbridge, Ma where the Norman Rockwell is located this museum had far more of his illustrations. The mansion is lovingly taken care of and is a museum in itself. The grounds are beautiful and we plan to return when the roses are in bloom and the fountains are running. I was truly overwhelmed by the numerous art pieces and statuary. The staff are friendly and will answer any questions you may have. A truly remarkable treasure in the heart of Newport.

We wandered around with the audio tour and then with the guided tour. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. The "hour" tour lasted close to 90 minutes and it got over too soon!!!!! What a great way to get an appreciation of the art genre!!!

Art that’s made to be reproduced is what this museum specializes in. And the art is quite fine. Lots of narrative embedded in each picture. Very deep collections of a relatively small number of artists, all of whom are > first rate.

If you can, take a tour. We learned a lot about this history of illustration in the US (Jim Rough was great). And as a contrast to all of the mansions in Newport, the illustrations tend to focus on the lives of ordinary people-very refreshing.
