Owner description: America's Cup Charters is Newport, RI's premier sailing company chartering the legends of the America's Cup trophy. We’ve been chartering the America's Cup legends since 1986. We also offer daily ticketed sails for individuals. Our fleet includes the illustrious Intrepid - the two time winner of the coveted America's Cup trophy, Weatherly - winner of the America's Cup and also one of the few yachts listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Ted Hood's infamous Nefertiti, and former ocean racer Ted Turner's champion and America's Cup contender American Eagle. Race, train, or just relax aboard the legendary 70' long 12-Meter Class yachts. This can be an interactive hands-on experience, no sailing experience necessary, or a casual relaxing sail. Each yacht has a captain and two crew members on board to interact with our guests. We give people the chance to feel what it's like to be part of an America's Cup experience. The protected waters and predictable breezes of Narragansett Bay make for a comfortable racing and cruising experience.

My wfe and I recently planned a sailiing trip on the 12 meter boat. Not sure what to expect we were excited about the opportunity to take part in a sailing excursion. We could take part in raising the sails or driving the boat. The boat sailed around 8 knots. I would suggest the crew taked a more interest in explaining the sailing techniques and telling us beforehand on how the excusion would run. The cost of the trip is $70.00 per individual and the sail time is around 1.5 hours. Overall I was pleased on the day which turned out to be a nice day for sailing.

Our team had a great experience! Julie was very helpful, organized a terrific crew. The Nefertiti is a very well maintained boat with plenty of room. Our crew got us right in close to the International 12 Meter Races. Terrific!

I called America's Cup Charter while planning a trip to Newport on September 3 - 6, 2012. They said they would have sailings on all of these days at 5:00. I reserved a booking on Tuesday, September 4. Bruce at America's Cup warned me that they would not sail if the weather was bad, but said they would carry my reservation over to Wednesday or Thursday if necessary.

The weather was indeed bad on both Tuesday and Wednesday. I called both days and was told they would not be sailing. Both times we discussed the possibility of going on Thursday when the weather report was more optimistic. The weather on Thursday was quite nice, so I called America's Cup to ensure that they would be going out. I was informed that they had received a private charter for the entire boat, so no private passengers would be allowed.

I realize that these people have a business to run and I'm sure they made much more on the private charter than they would have from individual bookings. The bottom line is still the same though. If you want to make sure you go out on a 12 meter America's Cup is not a company you can rely on.

ScottsMI - We're sad that you did not have the opportunity to sail with us as we know it would have been a wonderful experience for your trip. Our Daily Sails(tickets) are scheduled around our private charters and the schedule is done monthly. We do have limited boats available and therefore limited seating for our Daily Sails. We do our best to get everyone out on the water and generally sail in the evening daily (except if the entire fleet is booked privately). As we are a sailing company, weather does play a part in our schedule and unfortunately that prevented you from sailing your 1st two choice dates with the 3rd choice day booked well over a year in advance for the entire fleet. We do apologize if there was a misunderstanding on what was available for our schedule every day while you were here. Bruce does his best to get everyone we can out on the water as shown by his communicating with you about our weather policy and encouraging you to book during the earlier days of your visit, just in case weather prevents us from sailing. We hope that you will consider sailing with us on your next visit and truly hope you enjoyed your time in Newport.

Sailing on a 12 meter boat, is simply something that should be done when visiting Newport!!! Just make sure the weather prediction is good, meaning - no "pea soup" fog.

We did a match race - American eagle vs. Weatherly. We - Weatherly won 2 to one. Being on such a historic boat and be able to sail in the sea around Newport was so great. Went with two teenagers and that worked out well. Thanks to George and the staff
