“"Top of Newport/One Bellevue" is fantastic.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2014

For the past few years, my wife and I have had the pleasure to dining at both the "Top of Newport" restaurant (located on the roof of the Hotel Viking) and "One Bellevue" restaurant (located by the main lobby of the Hotel Viking). Both locations are fantastic destinations that serve world-class cuisine with top-notch service. "Top of Newport" boasts a wonderful view of scenic Newport, Rhode Island, including a relaxing view of the nearby harbor.

The "Top of Newport" is also the location for "Spirits & Stogies" nights, held every Wednesday evening throughout the summer months. These events are always a crowd pleaser; attendees receive a three course meal, three drinks featuring the evenings selected spirit, and a cigar to pair with the meal. My wife and I love these events and make frequent visits throughout the summer. We have also had the pleasure of introducing many of our friends and family to these events, all of whom have unanimously enjoyed the delicious pairings of food, beverage, and cigar. The menu for these events change weekly and the staff is incredibly courteous and helpful. Prime example: one of our friends who came to a "Spirits & Stogie" event inquired about the gluten content of the evenings meal (for dietary reasons). The manager and chef at the "Top of Newport" contacted us, discussed the menu, and prepared a separate gluten-free menu for our friend to enjoy. This gluten-free meal, like the original meal offered at the event, was designed to specifically enhance and pair with flavors found in the night's spirit and cigar. They truly went above and beyond to make our evening enjoyable and worry free.

"One Bellevue" offers a few different dining location options. There is a sleek bar room area with ample seating at sturdy, polished wooden tables. There is also an elegant dining room fit for a romantic evening. This area opens up to the restaurants courtyard; patrons can dine outside to enjoy the fresh air while taking in a view of the impressive garden. The outdoor fireplace is the perfect spot to warm up with a late-night drink on a cool evening.

I can not recommend the "Top of Newport" and "One Bellevue" enough. Both establishments offer incredible dining experiences and are staffed by caring, courteous, and dedicated staff. If you are ever in the Newport area, the "Top of Newport" and "One Bellevue" will never disappoint.

“Great place to enjoy an outdoor drink or meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2014

a "warmer" feel and friendlier welcome than that of traditional restaurant in a hotel. Great outdoor seating area with gas fireplace makes it the perfect place for a late night meal or drink.

“Don't waste your money!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2014

While staying at a nearby B & B, four of us decided to have a late supper (8 pm) at the restaurant in the Hotel Viking. What a mistake! One of the women had stayed at this hotel on a previous visit to Newport and she had enjoyed the food. The place was almost deserted when we arrived and this should have alerted us to the current state of affairs. Although there were several servers wandering around, it took a waiter 45 minutes to take our order. We ordered soup and appetizers and one person ordered dessert. After almost another hour of waiting, and two complaints to the manager, our food finally arrived. My bowl of soup was terrible ( I barely choked down half) and it cost $11 plus tax and tip. $14 for (half) a bowl of soup!!! The dessert crepes which my friend ordered were old, stale and hard around the edges. The appetizers were ok, but not great. The manager came back over to ask how things were, but never offered to compensate our miserable experience in any way. No wonder the place was empty. Stay away!

“Wonderful Restaurant in an Historic Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2014

Beautiful spot. Rarely overcrowded, but never empty either. Great outdoor seating with a gas fireplace to either have your meal or enjoy an after dinner drink. We have been here many times for dinner or just drinks. We love this place. The staff here is exceptional, i'll go as far as to say probably one of the top restaurants in terms of service that we have ever been to. We have met the chef before and I would say he is one of the top chefs in the city. We have ordered most of the items on the menu, from the Lamb chops (best I have ever tasted) to the short rib, and the Tuna and never walked away disappointed. Its a fantastic spot for a romantic dinner or simply dining with friends. Highly recommend trying.

“Afternoon Tea ! Where's the tea??”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2014

We have had afternoon tea all over the country. The tea sandwiches were different to say the least. They were just not the kind of sandwiches you would expect at tea, except for the cucumber one. The scones were very good and served with clotted cream. The truffles were good. The tea bread was simply a coffee cake. It was good but not a tea bread. The most bizarre part was that it did not come with tea!! We got to pick from a box of tea bags that we steeped ourselves in our tea pot. When the bill came we were surprised to see that the tea bag was $4 (each tea bag). And not included in the "tea". We complained and they subtracted the $8 from the bill. It was only ok and we will not go back when we visit Newport next time.
