spent the night before taking daughter to college for Fall semester at the Viking Hotel, very nice. Then in the morning, went to the hostess stand ("Wait to be seated"), Went inside and encountered a frazzled hostess ("everyone showed up at once"), less than 20% of tables were occupied??. Asked to wait to be seated, another 5 mins, then a waiter sat us and took the order.Over the following 30 minutes never saw him again, asked 2 other waitresses to locate him and send him over. Nothing happenned- no waiter, no food, only a frazzled hostess. Left, front desk hotel woman gave a parking fee refund w/o being asked. She must do that regularly.

We ate here as part of our stay at The Viking hotel recently and were impressed with their service and quality. Their menu is smaller than not-attached-to-hotel restaurants, but we enjoyed their food and their prices were reasonable.

The Viking Hotel is a Newport institution that has retained its old-fashioned elegance but has modernized selectively, so it is both classic and up to date. One Bellevue has both indoor and terrace seating in season. The dining room is classy and classic. We were a party of five. Our waiter was well-informed about every dish, and easily accommodated the vegetarian and picky eaters among us. The menu includes a generous variety of appetizers and main dishes. Portions were rather generous compared to portions at most similar restaurants. There was no risk of "paying through the nose and walking away hungry," a particular gripe of mine at high priced eateries. Most of my party enjoyed seafood dishes, while some went for steak or a vegetarian option. Two said that particular dishes were the best they had ever eaten. While expensive, considering the overall experience, even though I caught the check, I considered my money well spent.

While I would not go out of my way to dine here if I was staying someplace other than the Viking, it was decent for breakfast if you are staying at the hotel. My only complaint was the slowness of the service. I understand that on Sundays most people eat the buffet, but the service was just sooooo slow. It would be great for dinner outdoors or a cocktail on a chillier night, because it has an outdoor fireplace which is tres romantic!
