We set out to find the best in Newport in one week. We may of found in here at the Black Pearl. We had the menu special, lamb tenderloin, cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is wonderful and service impeccable. They didn't tell you to keep your fork, or whisk away your plate before the other people at the table are finished. I was beginning to think there was a 'dish' shortage in Newport. Can't get the waiters to leave the plate until you can see everyone is finished! Stop rushing us! The cocktails were reasonably priced. I have almost stopped drinking out when I see $11 to $15 for a cocktail, there's were $7.50. This may be our new favorite restaurant in Newport.

My wife and I have lunch at the Black Pearl every time we visit Newport. The chowder is the best around and the atmosphere cannot be beat. It's a local institution for a reason and is definitely worth a visit.

Overall, the tavern side has sitting European style available in the colder weather - tables are a tight fit so get ready to enjoy the people sitting next to you! Started with the clam chowder - a little salty for our tastes. Moved onto the Boston salad with apples and walnuts. It could have used some sweetness, a bit plain. Had the fish cakes, they were very good but the julienne vegies you couldn't pick up with the forks supplied. Drinks came out in one size glass whether it was an iced tea or beer - very odd and very small.

Good service since they had to come around very often to refill the glasses!

great location and its been here forever. however the owner does not put a dime into it and the food is really not up to snuff. i'd avoid it , there is better food and attention on the wharf. it is a long sad story...

Absolutely the #1 Clam Chowder in New England...and we just about have tried them all. If you can't eat there, buy a can to take home.
