“A Hearty Lunch”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Went for a late lunch on a cold, winter day. We were seated immediately in the Tavern, the casual side of the restaurant that seats about 50 people. The wait staff are young and very friendly. The menu has something for everyone and we were also given a hand-written specials list with 6-7 daily specials. The daily specials included such dishes as: corned beef and cabbage soup, halibut and striped bass entrees, and shepherd's pie. The regular menu has chowders, chili, salads, omlets (if you arrive before 2:30), lobster rolls, burgers, sandwiches, chicken pot pie, and fish, chicken and beef entres. My husband had the shepherd's pie and declared it a winner. An ample portion, hearty and full of beef, with a nice crust of mashed taters. I had a Kobe burger, cooked medium with great fries. The table next to us stopped by for dessert and raved about the key lime pie and the hot fudge sundae. The only negative was the chairs which weren't very comfortable, but the good food and friendly waitresses get high marks. We will visit again whe we return to Newport.

“Lunch -- Mostly Very Good”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Our recent lunch at the Black Pearl was a bit of mixed bag. Tables are very tightly packed - to an uncomfortable degree.

Our fried brie appetizer was terrific. The Thai Lobster Fish Cakes were very tasty, with lots of large chunks of lobster meat. My husband did not particularly enjoy his lamb stew, and I would have to agree that the view from my side of the table showed it to be mostly potato and very little lamb.

For Dessert -- The sticky toffee pudding was AWESOME! This rivaled the superb sticky toffee pudding that I've had in England and would be enough for me to make the trip back to Newport!

“Classic NE Dining Experience”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

We typically eat here and Brick Alley when we come to Newport. The chowder is simply the best in all the area -- the bowl is big, and its served HOT. Instead of the crackers, ask for the great rolls.

“Historic”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

This place has been around forever, but is still a strong performer. The tavern side is our favorite - it is casual, priced right and delicious. The Commodore Room is more formal, similar menu and more expensive. The service is great on both sides.
