“The price is right, but....”
Reviewed October 3, 2009

Each time we stay here, we vow never to come back.

But we do. The price ($110 or so a night in the summer) is right.

Last time we stayed here in July 2009, rowdy guests pulled the fire alarm at 3 AM. We were in the handicapped unit, so a strobe light went off and an extra loud alarm sounded. I thought Newport was getting invaded. A few years ago, the hotel ran out of towels over the July 4th weekend.

Sometimes -- though not always -- there's an odor emanating from the sewage treatment plant across the street.

Still, other hotels in town cost more than $300/night during the summer, so this remains a bargain despite the hassles.

Stayed here on 5/24/09 to 5/25, Memorial Day weekend.
It is on the fringe of Newport, main area of town is about 1 to 2 miles away. Too dangerous to walk to because u have to cross a busy road. When I went to Providence Airport and downtown Providence, took the 14 line bus from Newport Visitor Ctr. Line 20 also goes to Providence, but it doesn't run right by hotel. In the summer, u can take a ferry from Providence to Newport. Go to RIPTA website for transit info. It's a short drive to Newport if u have a car, taxi should not cost much . Parking is free at hotel, but driving in Newport in the summer can be a pain . Parking may set u back a few bucks. Newport has a trolley system .
Read the negative reviews. I did not encounter problems w cleanliness. Maybe the hotel has been renovated since last summer. It was light, bright, and airy in addition to being clean.Toilet tank was dripping water on the floor, looks like a bad installation job. Mgr said they recently installed toilets. Told several people about it, they never fixed it. Put a towel on the floor to soak up the water.
We were right next to the road, traffic was not too loud except when a biker would rev his engine. Stay in a room away from the road. Housekeeping needs to be quieter when they work.
No concerns about safety.
Virtually no amenities.
Friendly staff.
Lots of places top eat within walking distance. There's a shopping center across the street.
$90 was a bit steep for a Motel 6, but it was by far, the most affordable hotel in the area. They have no rewards program.
Memorial Day in Newport was dead, I was the only customer in a lot of shops around the Visitor Ctr. I suspect it may be a slow yr there, u might be able to swing some good deals by contacting hotels directly.
This is a good place if u just want a palce to sleep an stow your stuff. It won't knock your socks off.

We were in Newport for a long overdue vacation and were looking to save some money on the room to allow for us to spend more on other parts of our trip. Well, we did save a bunch of money, but only because they ended up refunding us two of our three nights. We arrived and checked in at about 4:00 on Thursday and went right to our room. The room was nothing special, but all we did was drop off our bags and head into town. Upon our return I spent fifteen minutes trying to get the AC unit to work, not impressed. We then noticed that there were certain stains in the bathroom. Some on the toilet seat and some on the door frame. We were lucky to have brought our own pillows because the bed and pillows were hard and uncomfortable. After a rough nights sleep courtesy of the hard bed and the AC that froze us out and would not turn off...we awoke to little flying bugs coming up from the sink. We headed out for the day with the hopes that the housekeeping staff would take care of everything before we returned. Unfortunately when we returned to the room we found that the housekeeping staff hadn’t done anything at all to our room. The trash wasn’t emptied, the beds weren’t made, the dirty towels weren’t replaced…We went and spoke with the girl at the front desk who was very kind but was only able to offer an apology, assurance that she would pass on the info to the crew tomorrow and some clean towels. We settled in for the night after messing with the AC again. Another rough night on the hard bed, this time the AC wasn’t cool enough. Off to the mansions with hopes that our room would be taken care of by the time we got back. We returned to yet another disappointment. This time was even worse; they had collected the dirty towels, but done nothing else. This was over the line and we headed back to the front desk. With another apology, the assurance that we could speak with the manager in the morning and a clean set of towels we headed back to the room for our last night. We woke early and packed our things and headed down to speak with the manager. He barely heard half of our story before walking out from his office to behind the counter and began the refund process. It seemed as though he knew about the issues because he didn’t even hear us out. In addition to that there was already a completed refund slip sitting on the back counter. The issues with our room were not the only ones as the exit door to the outside was broken and did not lock which didn’t make us feel particularly safe. We will certainly not be going back and would not recommend that anyone EVER stay in this hotel! I was quite disappointed because I have stayed in Motel 6s all across the country when trying to travel on a budget and always found them to be clean and adequate albeit nothing special.

After reading the "scary" and "stay away" reviews I felt compelled to post a review regarding my stay June 13 [yes it was a friday] thru the 14th. It was a trying time as I was dropping my middle son off for officer candidate school. His older brother was with me. The three of us stayed in room 224. The room was clean the beds comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the tub and sink seemed to be no older than a few years. The hotel is within a two minute walk of Wal-Mart and a Stop and Shop. The down town attractions [Thames Street and Ocean Drive] are a 5 minute car ride away. My sons enjoyed listening to the laughter of a group of young women who were staying for a wedding that weekend. The room was $100 bucks and $6 a nite for my older son. The motel allows up to 4 adults per room for the additional $6 charge. Unless you are looking for a romantic stay at one of the pricy hotels along Ocean Drive why would you want to pay $220 a nite for a Holiday Inn Select??? The young lady at the check in desk was cordial and helpful. The $3.00 wifi is optional. Pray for our troops.

We decided we wanted to go to Newport for a weekend getaway but didn't have much money to play with. I stumbled upon the Motel 6 in Newport and decided to take a chance since it had some mixed reviews. Let me just say that the ONLY positive about this place is the price. Here are some quick points to think about before booking this place:

1. The rooms are old and dirty

2. Don't even bother asking for an extra pillow because as I was told by the front desk, "We don't have any extra pillows"

3. Don't expect to sleep late because they have the LOUDEST staff I have ever heard. The cleaning crew started working around 7am and were the most inconsiderate people I have ever heard.

But as the saying goes... you get what you pay for!

Reading the other somewhat favorable reviews (some of which I had read and relied on before I reserved), I feel I must add my comments and warn people away. I don't care how cheap it is, this was the scariest hotel I have ever been too. I don't even know why we proceeded with checking in. I should have known something was wrong when the actual price was less than we had reserved on their website. At the front desk, there is bulletproof glass and a "slot" through which you can slip your paperwork, etc. It seems like they might get some "hourly" business because of the naval base across the street, if you know what I mean. I wasn't expecting the Ritz, but the room looked like a prison cell. I wished I had taken pictures. The room was large enough for two beds, but had one bed and a wide open space. It made us wonder what happened in the other bed. We were afraid to leave our bags, so we took them with us. After leaving the hotel, I decided there was no way I was going to be able to stay there. My husband insisted on going back to get our money back, which I was willing to give up if only I didn't have to sleep there. I do have to say that they refunded our money without argument. We found another hotel through the very helpful travel center in town, and got a wonderful room at the Hampton Inn. I'll never try to go that cheap again.

  • Disliked — The fact that they gave us our money back.
