We loved this place. it does not have the features of a hotel but still worth every penny. The views are amazing, We sat out late at night and just watched the sparkle of the water from the bridge lights. We worth the trip. It is a must if your visiting Newport.

This was our 3rd visit to Rose Island, and our second overnight stay. We sure hope that this will be an annual event.

We love the foghorn room. It is a lovely appointed room in the former foghorn building. It is set up in a New England nautical theme. The bed is comfortable and the room is cozy.

We took two kayak trips around the island. The birds and boats are great to look at. We also had a great nap on the hammock. Nothing like resting on the warm sun and being cooled be a saltwater breeze.

Bring your own food, carry in and carry out what you need. Leave the place at least as good as you found it!

Want beauty and relaxation? Come here!

We visited the Rose Island Lighthouse as part of a Save the Bay sealing watching cruise. The tour provided a good explanation of the history of the lighthouse and island. We liked touring the inside of the lighthouse and exploring the rocky waterfront. None of us are lighthouse buffs but we still enjoyed the visit.

Staying at this lighthouse was probably similar in many ways to staying at someone's old, remote mountain cabin. The furniture is thread-worn, the place is full of clutter, and I could spend a week here cleaning. I cleaned the bathroom upon arrival, and being a gorgeous weekend we spent most of our time outside. Water is scarce but that wasn't a big deal. Prior guests have left behind all kinds of goodies, so along with what we'd brought with us, there was more than enough selection of snacks and drinks. There were sailboat races going on and they were great to watch.
Other guests had friends visiting for the day and that group was pretty rowdy. I would've preferred a quieter experience but that was just the luck of the draw. It wasn't unpleasant.
The view cannot be beat!
In the morning, we took the kayaks around the island, saw cormorants doing their sun-salutations, and boats heading out in the calm, glassy water. After we packed our things we cleaned up and left the place better than we found it. It would be nicer if everyone did that, but the caretakers could also declutter.
I'm really glad we did experience this, but I can't say it's on our list of places to return to.

Lighthouses are magical to begin with....but this one has so much history and built in comfort. You cannot beat the location, sunsets and the privacy. I think everyone who plans a trip here, thinks they will run out of food and drink - so there is a TON of food awaiting your arrival and of course we were no different! The Lighthouse staff are so nice and helpful. They are passionate about the restoration and maintenance of the lighthouse and it shows. We kayaked, pulled fresh mussels right off the under part of the floating dock and were treated to the best mussels we've ever had. There are fishing rods, great andirondack chairs to relax in and watch the sailing races in the early evening....it is a wonderful experience. Every day there were literally hundreds of starfish washing up on the shores. The bird preserve is interesting - who knew that seagulls were endangered ? :-D They OWN their side of the island during breeding time and let you know it. On the other hand - we witnessed baby seagulls hatching on the seashore one morning which was an experience in itself. Our weather wasn't great, but we still had a fabulous time. I would recommend this for couples, a girls's weekend, young family w/ kids like 8-13 yo and/or a small group of friends to reconnect. I would like to go back in the winter for the different perspective. AWESOME - and to all that have been there - I remind you it's '3Ps and a Poo' Check it out for yourself!

Room Tip: Be sure an rent the Keeper's apartment for the best experience. If privacy is important - rent t...

We spent one night at the lighthouse, and really LOVED it -- absolutely unique and picturesque and restful. We took the 10 a.m. boat over from Newport (which the lighthouse staff arranges, as well as the car parking permit at Newport), and on arrival we were given a tour of the lighthouse by a cheerful volunteer -- a tour of both the museum, and the how-to's involved in spending the night in one of the rooms. Since the sleeping rooms aren't available until 4 p.m. (when the museum closes), we spent hours at leisure reading in the adirondack chairs, swimming in the bay, and relaxing on the grass. There were a few museum day visitors, but just a few, so it was all very peaceful (though not sure it would be as enjoyable killing those hours if it was raining...). The shower is outdoors (only) but was great, and you have to be into pumping water for the sink and toilets; you also are expected to clean up after yourselves, do your dishes, and make your bed (linen is provided) before you leave. We slept well, despite the seagulls' chatter. Every view from the lighthouse is spectacular, and each view (N/S/E/W) is very different, so you could literally spend all day just taking in the views. We got lucky with great fellow guests, and we shared the bits of food we brought with us and made. We will definitely return!!!

We had found pre-parenting memories of the Newport area but knew that touring mansions every day wasn't going to cut it with the 6 and 11 year olds we travel with these days, so we were looking for something that would appeal to everyone and provide a memorable vacation experience. We found that and more at the Rose Island Lighthouse. We rented the whole first floor so our girl had her own room and the little guy had the keeper's bed, while we had a bedroom off to ourselves. Beds were comfy, linens worn but clean, everything kept up well. The kids had a blast exploring the island all day. We probably could have brought more food with us but we were trying to travel light; still, I advise bringing snacks and fruit to munch on. The only thing we didn't like was the lack of security during the time the lighthouse museum was open; there was no locked area to store our stuff and although it was out of the way we still felt uncomfortable with that situation. Hopefully a locker can be added that would solve this problem. My kids keep asking if we can go back to the lighthouse...they totally loved this experience and so did we! Highly recommended!
