My girlfriend and I were looking for a great weekend getaway from New York City. Artful Lodger hit the spot.

The location is fantastic. It is a short five or ten minute walk from the Cliff Walk and the main drag.

The innkeepers, Michael and Lieza, were extremely accommodating of our late arrival. They were also wonderfully hospitable. They greeted us for breakfast each morning, prepared our breakfasts to order, and kept the table conversation flowing.

We appreciated that they kept wine glasses and a corkscrew handy, and stocked the refrigerator with bottled water.

The Rose room is as small as advertised. It is really cute, but don't expect any room to spare.

My suggestions to Michael and Lieza:
* There are too many brochures strewn about the sitting room. Most patrons know what they want to see, and will ask you if they don't. However, please keep the mints there.
* The website advertises plush terry robes. They were definitely not plush. I am not sure they were terry either. A couple of luxurious robes would have been amazing!
* The cable channels are confusing. A channel list would have been helpful. (We needed to track Hurricane Sandy to plan our exit.)
* The bed is really high. Really really high. The room could use a better step stool to get up to it.

All-in-all, we really enjoyed staying there and would recommend it to a friend.

Room Tip: If you need a room on the "cheap" then go for the Rose room. If you want some space and a...

The Artful Lodger is well located to enjoy the mansions or shops/restaurants of Newport without a car but far enough from the main street to enjoy a peaceful sleep or drink in the garden or on the terrace with a view over the rooftops to the harbour. There is free parking on site(a bonus in the congested streets of Newport) and the friendly hosts make this an excellent home from home.

This was the second time my boyfriend and I stayed at the Artful Lodger and it was just as great as the first. The inn keepers were very kind, as well as accommodating. The rooms are always clean and the breakfast is delicious! We love the location because it's close to everything yet far enough away to enjoy some peace and quiet. Love this place:)

My husband and I spent our anniversary at The Artful Lodger Inn in Newport Rhode Island. It was clean, pleasant, homey and down right charming. We look forward to our next visit to the Artful Lodger Inn next year and for many years after. Definately a place we reccomend to people looking for a quaint yet centrally located place to stay in Rhode Island.

We very much enjoyed our first trip to Newport, Rhode Island, and we believe that our stay at the Artful Lodger played a big role in that experience. My boyfriend and I wanted a quiet get-away for my birthday, so we chose this centrally located bed and breakfast. I have to say, this was our first B&B experience, but we can't wait to go back again! Immediately, the innkeepers were accommodating and let us check in several hours early. Michael was extremely helpful, providing us endless information on the area - including restaurants, attractions, the mansions, traveling, maps, etc. We felt we were able to visit and explore everything from this very convenient location! As there was so much to do in a little amount of time, we very much valued the innkeeper's opinion.

The beds and room were very comfortable and we both had a great night's sleep. Rooms were spotless. The breakfast the next morning was more than enough food (all delicious) and we very much enjoyed chatting with the out guests about their trip while looking out onto the harbor. We even sat outside one night and enjoyed some wine and the beautiful weather.

Stay here for the entertaining company and perfect location! We were able to park our car behind the B&B and didn't use it again until we left Newport! You are literally in the backyard of the Elms mansion and steps from the others. Restaurants, museums, shopping, and the harbor are minutes away, yet the B&B was quiet and settled on a side street.

The only negative is that it was very hard getting to Newport by train. The closest amtrak station is thirty minutes away across the bridge. Although we didn't use it, there seems to be a great bus system that goes into Newport.

Room Tip: It was worth it to pick a room with it's own bathroom!

Have to agree with the review posted by Jennifer L.; we were told we would recieve an email confirmation and didn't. I called the Inn and didn't receive a return call. When we arrived, we rang the doorbell which is supposed to ring in the innkeeper's quarters and no one answered. It was only after banging on the door that another guest opened the door and let us in. He also instructed us where to locate the innkeepers on the third floor.

Our biggest complaints were the innkeepers as well. After climbing the two flights and knocking, I could hear the innkeepers loudly arguing and swearing. Michael, the male innkeeper answered the door while screaming an expletive "F***G and also reeked of alcohol, obviously intoxicated. Having spent a great deal of money on the reservation, this wasn't the welcome I expected. Further, there weren't clean towels in the room and a basket with dirty linens was left on the bed. I agree with the accomodations review as well. The room was dark and the shower was tiny. The best room of the Inn was the breakfast room with a beautiful view. It is awkward though to enter into the innkeepers living quarters for breakfast.

It feel as they were trying too hard throughout our stay to overcome this disastrous beginning and weren't quite able to do so, particularly when Michael smelled of alcohol the following morning. Our final morning left me waiting for over 20 minutes for breakfast despite multiple reminders from Lieza. The pancakes were great once I finally recieved them. Really enjoyed meeting the other guests during breakfasts.

Great weekend in Newport with not so great accomodations. Wouldn't return, particularly with so many housing options available.

This was an awful review to read. Our sincerest apologies for the behavior you witnessed. When two unfavorable reviews come in, back to back, especially after receiving such amazing ones over the last 2 years, it is certainly a clear indication of the need to alter activity to ensure the best possible guest experience. Life is not always kind and can take it's toll, but as an Innkeeper, your greatest challenge, sometimes, is making sure that no matter what befalls you personally, the guests are not affected by it and made to feel uncomfortable. As far as not being greeted at the door and the unreadiness of the room, we are learning that sometimes we do ourselves and guests a disservice by allowing folks to check in early and in our attempt to be flexible, we actually cause more displeasure than appreciation. In this case, what occured was nothing short of embarrassing and for that, again, we apologize.

Good location and parking. Clean room but felt it was cheaply decorated.Small plastic shower with little room to move around in. Reminded me of camp. The living room area was dark and not very inviting to hang out in. Best room was the eat in dining area with a beautiful view of the harbor but you have to climb 2 flights of very narrow winding steps to get there. I'm surprised no other reviews mentioned this. Good breakfast with many options. My biggest pet peeve were the Inn Keepers. Although they had good intentions they were rude and inappropriate in behavior. Leud sexual comments about neighbors, getting slurring drunk one night, complaining about previous guests, whining about having no free time, bickering with each other in front of guests. Been to many B&B's and have never had an issue with being uncomfortable around the innkeepers so this was weird. Maybe it was an off weekend for them. So overall it fit our needs of a decent place to stay but would not go back.
