“Loud, Dated and unhelpful staff”
Reviewed March 17, 2006

Sad hotel hasn't been updated since it was built.

Do not stay on the side facing away from downtown newport - there is loud music until 1.00am from the checky monkey (sounded like a good cover band in our room).

Breakfast is a joke - it's a coffee and gross muffins - not even juice or fruit.

the staff is aloof.

upside - location is good - parking is secure - clean.

no hairdryer in the bathroom

and .....

elevator has seen better days

all rooms seem to be smoking

you can hear the people above you - we were on the third floor.

no tv in bedroom

beds were way too soft

My wife and I stayed in this hotel the weekend of our wedding. She woke up the night before we got married to water dripping on the bed and her wedding dress. We had to sleep on a sofa bed in the living room the night of our wedding because the bed in the room was still wet. The hotel did not care and will only comp me one of those nights. I just wrote a letter to the board of directors. Way to much work for something that should have been takin care of right away. Oh yeah, if you don't smoke stay far far away. The place stinks like smoke, we had to try three rooms before we found one that smelled decent, let alone good. There are much better places to stay in newport. One of the worst hotels I've ever seen.

My wife and I randomly landed upon the NBC. Granted we arrived early, 8am, check in was not until 3pm. We were staying 1 night and leaving at 5am the following day. We asked if it would be possible to have the room, we were staying prioritized so we could relax a bit. The hotel staff looked at us as if we had two heads. They aggressively declined us to check in before "the floor is cleaned" and said guests are not allowed in until it is complete. I asked if we go out and ended up back before 3pm and the room is ready could you see what you can do about letting us up. I received a weak, I cannot promise you anything.

We arrive back at 2:20pm. You guessed it they would not let us in until 3pm.

We finally get, use the Jacuzzi tub and relax only to have our phone ring saying please stop the Jacuzzi it is leaking in the downstairs. Needless to say, we were not very concerned about the leak.

We ordered room service and it took 50 minutes to get a cold pizza delivered

Good Location, Don’t expect to be treated nicely

As a non-smoker, where in South Africa smoking is a big no-no in public spaces, one could not find a smoke free zone in the hotel, as a childrens resort they should rethink there ideas not everyone is from Europe. Renovations were under way BUT DURING high season, so all restaurants were shut we queued like cattle for the conference centre to have breakfast. The rooms were not up to scratch , toiletries were not filled up daily and on the last day we even ran out of toilet paper, half a roll for 4 people!!!! While walking around and chatting to people that work there, I think we would have preferred the New York Hotel, it was quieter and far more civilized. I am afraid that as a South African we are used to decent hotels with top service when paying for it.
WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND IT NOR WOULD WE EVER GO BACK!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I started going to Newport Bay Club in 1990. Unfortunately it has taken a steady decline over the years. We now exclusively stay at Castlehill Inn, the best in Newport. During our last visit, since we decided to go last minute, Castle Hill was booked, we decided to try our old haunt. What a terrible disappointment. The beds are uncomfortable, the sheets old, tattered and of inferior quality. The coverlets have burn holes and are quite disgusting. Time to update! The rooms are not what I would consider clean and the staff seems not to care if you are there or not. Bad attitudes. Newport is a wonderful place with so much to offer. The Newport Bay Club's location is prime but unfortunately this seasoned traveler will not be retuning any time soon. Stay at Castlehill Hill! If you must stay in a time share type unit try The Wellington.

I had read the reviews on TripAdvisor and was a little worried about going to this hotel. However, when we arrived late Friday night, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel would do itself justice to put a greater variety of photos of the rooms and hotel on their website. The hotel is an old stone warehouse. Very well maintained from the outside with a secured parking lot. The location is perfect, right in the middle of it all in Newport. All the shops are short walking to the wharfs. We were in room 204 on the second floor. It was quiet considering the second night we were there was game 2 of the World Series and Boston was playing. Occasionally, you could hear others talking in other rooms, but could not hear anything from the bedroom of the 1 bedroom suite we had. There are old large wood beams for the ceiling and above the windows. The furniture and room were clean and looked fairly new. The bathroom was clean and we did not use the jacuzzi. The staff was not as helpful as they could have been and were kind of aloof. They did not have suggestions as for places to eat and stuff like that. Overall, it was worth the $159 per night special rate. Not sure if I would pay more for this hotel, but its location and what you got was a steal at $159.
