Absolutely enjoyed our stay! The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. The staff was very informative and friendly. Having a complimentary parking space and free wifi was definitely a plus. The complimentary breakfast was extremely well done. Most importantly, was its proximity to the shops and restaurants. Everything was within walking distance. All in all, we would stay there again.

Great Newport location in the heart of town with on site parking a plus for the area since most everywhere you want to go you can walk while you site see. Mansions a 10 minute car ride away. Clean rooms, small quarters. Wonderful breakfast buffet with more than enough choices to suit every pallet.

Room Tip: 1st floor can be a bit noisy with early checkout traffic and the breakfast area close by

Dear TorgersonTrio --

It makes us so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay in downtown Newport. Thank you for sharing your positive impressions of what the Jailhouse has to offer: great location, clean rooms, free parking, free continental breakfast ... free chocolate chip cookies and wifi, too!

We hope to see you again if your travels bring you to Newport.

Great location and had fantastic service from the night staff but the manager was less than friendly. The B&B had real iron bars which was interesting and the breakfast was fine, but I would try and find a friendlier b&b next time as we LOVE Newport.

Dear Mrachael,

I'm so glad you enjoyed the location, historic atmosphere, helpful staff and continental breakfast at the Jailhouse Inn ... but distressed you didn't find me friendly! If I was having a bad day or moment, I certainly shouldn't have passed that feeling along to you. Sincere apologies, and I do hope you'll stay with us again. FYI: We have LOTS of guests who return to Newport and the Jailhouse year after year. We call them repeat offenders ;)

All best wishes,

My husband and I stayed here for two nights for a wedding. We were in room 9 (king bed) on the second floor. The room was larger than we were expecting, with a little space for a comfy chair (which my husband sat in the entire time when we were in the room). The room was clean - minus the blinds which were so filthy it looked like they had literally never been dusted. The bed was huge but hard. They had 5! king sized pillows on the bed, which was awesome. And they were not all the mushy pancake type pillows, they actually had shape. The bathroom was standard, though only one hook for hanging towels (why do all hotels insist on never having enough places to hang towels??). One comment on the bathroom - the air circulation is terrible so when you shower in there with the door closed, it's like a sauna. Some people love that but it got to be a bit to hot for my husband and I so we started showering with the door open. Which is fine until it creeps out into the room and effects that temp too (and women, doing our hair)! The air conditioning is controlled by a window unit, which worked just fine. We would turn it up to high when we left and would come back to a nice cool room. The free breakfast was perfect for me - hardboiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, cereal. They even had waffles. My husband likes pastries and such so he was not as satisfied as I was with it. But it was free so no complaining here! We loved the fresh cookies they served during the day, they were delicious! The staff was very accommodating and answered all our questions. Parking was great, we had no problems ever finding a spot and it was included in the room price as well. The B&B is in a great location, right near lots of shopping and great restaurants and the water front.

I do want to say, I am not usually a B&B fan as I don't like the whole 'in your face' feel of some B&B's...where you feel you have to integrate with the other guests and share living spaces and such. This B&B was perfect as it still felt quaint but it was very private. The staff was very nice, there was always someone at the front desk but no one bothered you.

One comment on booking a room here - if you can, pay the extra money and get a room on the 3rd floor. We were on the second floor and constantly heard the banging of doors above us. It was SO loud and obnoxious. There was one time where I swear someone was just opening and closing the door constantly for an hour. If you can, definitely go for the 3rd floor.

Room Tip: Go with the 3rd floor!

Dear Pinkrose529: Wow. Thank you for taking time to write such a thorough review. We are glad you enjoyed so many aspects of your stay ... especially all those pillows ;)

It's true, as you say, that the Jailhouse is not a typical B&B. As an inn with 23 guestrooms, we are slightly larger and less intimate. It's easy to interact with other guests and staff as much as you like, but there's plenty of space and privacy to do your own thing.

Yes, the third floor is the most quiet. That's not saying the first and second floors are "loud" but the third floor has the definite advantage of being on top. That's where our largest or premier rooms are located. Most third floor rooms also have dormers or skylights.

If your travels ever bring you back to Newport, we'd love to host you again. Please feel free to call directly so we can place you in the best exact room to suit your preferences.

Thank you for staying with us!

Sharon Riley, Manager, and the Jailhouse team

p.s. You'll be please to know we have replaced the blinds in room 9.

Our visit to Newport was enhanced by our stay at Jailhouse Inn. The location in a extremely safe area, just a short walk to shopping, restaurants and harbor. They have a private parking lot next to the Inn for your convenience. Our room was clean, quiet and affordably priced, the staff very polite and accommodating. The continental breakfast was prepared by 7:00 am each morning with a variety of fruits, cereals, breads, juice, great coffee always hot and ready. The front porch offers a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine in the afternoons, or just unwind after a busy day of sightseeing.
We would recommend Jailhouse Inn to anyone coming to Newport.

Dear Parham Family:

It makes so happy that you enjoyed Newport and the Jailhouse Inn. When guests are happy, we are happy ... period. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with others!

We especially appreciate your describing our continental breakfast and the pleasures of the front porch. Yes, room 19 (with that lovely arched window and separate sitting area) is a beauty.

We hope to see you again someday!

This is a mixed review. Great convenient location. Large clean room. Continental breakfast was a disappointment. Staff could use a lesson in hospitality. Don't expect the typical bed and breakfast quaint atmosphere. Be aware that the dumpsters are unloaded early in the morning just outside the rooms on the back side of the inn.

Dear damico8:

Thank you for staying at the Jailhouse Inn. I'm glad you enjoyed our location and cleanliness (two very important things) but sorry that your expectations of quaintness were not met.

In the interest of clarification, we are a 23-room "inn" — a bit larger and slightly different in style than a "bed and breakfast." It can be confusing to distinguish between inns and B&Bs on Trip Advisor, because they are all placed in the same category. In actuality, the Jailhouse is more like a small, downtown hotel housed in Newport's original jail and police station. You are correct in saying we are not a typical B&B. Again, I'm sorry if you were expecting something different.

Another clarification for those who may be reading along: Our complimentary, continental, serve-yourself breakfast includes an assortment of breads and bagels for toasting, croissants, fresh fruit, cereal, ham, cheese, granola, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, juice, coffee and a variety of teas. Guests often make breakfast sandwiches from these offerings. We realize that many B&Bs take a more formal breakfast approach, but guests tell us they enjoy our casual, flexible arrangement. And they DEFINITELY enjoy our fresh-baked cookies in the afternoons ;)

Thank you again for staying with us. Best wishes for the remainder of your summer!

The best of Jailhouse Inn is the location and free parking. The rooms are perfectly OK, comfortable and clean and rather big. But the Inn is not as quaint as we expected. It is more like a hotel with complimentary breakfast. We thought, however, it was good value for money.

Room Tip: Avoid getting a room on top floor, rather dark because of small windows.
