“Gorgeous-- but bad restaurant service”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

Unbelievable gorgeous setting and hotel, truly one of a kind.
Restaurant service was shockingly negligent and obtrusive --- waiters forgetting orders, disappearing for long stretches, jumping to clear to quickly, talking very loudly to each other and patrons. The food was good, but certainly not great.
Still, I would highly recommend this place because the location and the hotel are just that spectacular. Totally tranquil. Out of this world.

Room Tip: Book an ocean bungalow

Thank you very much for your comments following your recent visit to the Inn, although I was disappointed to learn that our restaurant service was far below your and our expectations. Please be assured that we have taken your comments to heart, and I am confident that you will see that we are much better than you experienced. We look forward to welcoming you back to Newport and Castle Hill.

Best regards,

Brian

Lunch on the lawn with a group from China. Service and food couldn't have been better. It will be a memory of a life time for the group of friends visiting America for the first time. The view has to be one of the best anywhere and the staff was very friendly and attentive.

Just got back from an anniversary stay at the Castle Inn. It is beautiful. The staff is consistent with the Relais Chateaux brand, by that I mean, totally accommodating and gracious. The hotel is very well maintained, charming and has a true historic presence. Our anniversary meal was excellent, with a few exceptions, while it is stated that jackets are suggested. My husband and only one other gentlemen wore a jacket. Others were dressed in wrinkled khakis, short sleeved shirts, and polos. We expected an elegant evening. The meal was excellent with exception of my halibut, which was very dry.

We woke from a very poor sleep as our room was hardly air conditioned from a half installed portable air conditioner they rolled in and left half the window completely open to the outside. This air conditioner was loud ! The dining room has a barely sufficient air conditioner, remainder of all the public spaces in the Inn are not air conditioned at all. A small detail that they are not making known. We were there when the day time temperature was above 90 degrees.

Thank you for your comments - they are very much appreciated. Like many establishments affected by this current heat wave, our air conditioning systems are struggling with the 90+ degree heat, which is very very rare in our area (normally, we're a good 10-15 degrees cooler!). The Agassiz Mansion was built in 1875 as a summer residence to take advantage of the moderating offshore breezes and temperatures that can be found at our spot on the mouth of Narragansett Bay, but it needs a lot of help in this type of weather! We are upgrading the air conditioning for the room in which you stayed and the dining room in the Agassiz Mansion, so I feel confident that you will notice an improvement on future visits.

I have also passed on your comments regarding your dining experience to our Chef. Despite these issues, I was happy to learn that you enjoyed your interactions with our staff and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Inn.

Kind regards,

Brian Young

We have stayed in a beach cottage and beach house. The views were wonderful and spending time outdoors on the deck was a pleasure. However, during both trips we found the interior of the rooms to be worn out and bathroom cleanliness left much room for improvement.

We stayed at Castle Hill for a graduation in May and forgot there was no elevator. My elderly mom could not walk the 2 flights to her reserved room and the front desk could not have been more understanding or accommodating in finding her a harbor cottage, when they were completely booked. The Lighthouse Suite where we stayed is a beautiful room.

The breakfast is exceptionally delicious and shows the creativity that the food is embellished with. (Lobster hash!) We had a late dinner in the bar and again the food and the service were equally remarkable.

We have previously stayed in a beach cottage which we also enjoyed very much but we prefer the cozy suite in the main building. Sitting on the lawn with a cocktail or enjoying the afternoon tea are experiences that make Castle Hill Inn such a wonderful place to stay.

Above all, the level of service from the GM, Brian, to the front desk, the waitstaff and the valets, (who drove my mom front the front of the hotel to her room in the back), was just exceptional.

The Castle Hill Inn in Newport offers a magnificent view of the water. The lawn slopes down to the water's edge with Adirondack chairs for your use. Sit back and sip a libation while watching the many boats on the water. This property is just down from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's childhood home. There is no food served on the lawn, just drinks but what a wonderful place to enjoy the scenery. We did not stay at the Inn as "the lawn" (as it is known), is open to all.

This is my second year staying at the Castle Hill Inn. I love it. Stayed in the Martha Walsh room last year. This year we stayed in the Agassiz suite. Both rooms were lovely. The only issue I have is that the tevlevision in the living room of the suite was rather small. They should invest in a larger flat screen TV which would be more fitting for the space. The bathrooms are GREAT! LOVE THE SOAKING TUB! Large separate showers.
The staff is very accomodating, and polite. Simply put, a lovely place.
I plan on trying the beach houses next!

I am delighted that you chose to stay with us again. The Mary Walsh and Mrs. Agassiz rooms in the Mansion are some of my favorite accommodations here at Castle Hill, and soaking tub is ideal for unwinding after a busy day in Newport. I am so sorry that you were disappointed with the television. I truly appreciate your feedback, and it is certainly something that we will consider. Thank you for your remarks, and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our beach house for your next stay!
