Don't miss taking a trip down Thames St beside the wharf. Wonderful shops and restaurants in beautiful downtown Newport.

“Gets crazy in the summertime”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

Thames Street is the heart of downtown and right next to the harbor. There's lots of cool shops and restaurants off here. Great for if you need to kill some time or like people-watching. (Best during daylight hours because the crazy college kids come out at night to paint the town red.)

Just be warned: the sidewalks are NOT wide enough to contain the massive throng of crowds! The entire strip should really be pedestrian-only.... Driving around here can be tricky and confusing, even with a GPS. Parking is also extremely limited, although there's a parking garage located behind the visitors center nearby.

Another warning: Thames Street can get really rowdy when the sun goes down! If you're a parent with kids, or you simply don't like lots of noise, I'd stay away from Thames at night. That being said, the waterfront area is THE place to be in late afternoon/early evening because the sun sets over the harbor and creates breathtaking views.

My suggestion? Do a sunset cruise or eat an early-ish supper on one of the piers so you can take advantage of the fantastic sunset. But then afterwards, hightail it back to your hotel to cap the night off in quiet relaxation without all the craziness!

“The Heart of Newport”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

This is the main drag that has all the popular restaurants and shops. All the other small streets are quaint and nice, but this is where everyone goes so in the summer months I can imagine it gets quite crowded here. I have only been on a April weekend and it was already crowded then.

“Great Shopping and Eateries.”

Along the larger stores on the other streets, Thames Street has many great small stores with local color. Great way to spend a few hours.

“Loved it!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

Great place to spend an afternoon or 2. We came for lunch and/or dinner everyday we were in town. Great shopping and eateries. Bowmen's wharf was across from the middle of Thames street and you get a great view of the harbor. Photos galore and sea breezes are easy to find!
