Owner description: The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris. Construction of The Elms was completed in 1901 at a cost reported at approximately $1.4 million. The interiors and furnishings were designed by Allard and Sons of Paris and were the setting for the Berwinds' collection of Renaissance ceramics, 18th century French and Venetian paintings, and Oriental jades.

“TAKE THE SERVANT LIFE TOUR!”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

This mansion belonged to a coal magnate, Berwind. The place is very big and it is always interesting to see how these people lived. The summer season was all about the parties they through. That is how their summers were spent and measured, It took a staff of 43 to work the house. Pretty amazing.

“Splendid time”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

It was amazing to put it simply, The backyard was by far the best feature of the home the pictures were the best of any other mansion in my opinion. Disappointed that we couldn't take pictures inside though I completely understand wanting to preserve the mansion and it's interior. The one and only true disappointment I personally had was they didn't sell shirts (which I collect one from everywhere I go)

“The place is gorgeous”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

Well, not only the Elms but also other houses like the Breakers and the Marble House, all of them are very beautiful and magnificent. But if you want to go inside the houses to impress yourself more, you have to prepare for the tickets. Nonmember tickets are $50 for individual, $75 for 2 and $90 for a family (2 adults 2 kids). Anyway, it's a great place for family and couple to walk around.

“My favorite mansion...”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

We did the Servants Tour before we toured the house... Recommend you do that to get the full effect. We did Marble House and The Breakers also over two days. My favorite part was walking into the Ballroom and can almost imagine it filled w all the people dressed to the nines. This is how the uber-rich lived...
