Owner description: The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris. Construction of The Elms was completed in 1901 at a cost reported at approximately $1.4 million. The interiors and furnishings were designed by Allard and Sons of Paris and were the setting for the Berwinds' collection of Renaissance ceramics, 18th century French and Venetian paintings, and Oriental jades.

I chose this with the combo ticket I bought. Very worthwhile seeing. It is a beautiful mansion, has impressive grounds, and it is educational to visit.

“Gorgeous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

Another of the Mansions that were open during the time we went. Absolutely loved the Elms. It was the first mansion we saw. The grounds were breath taking and I'm sure they are even better in the warmer months when the flowers are in bloom and trees are green. Rich in history and wonderfully kept, definitely a mansion to see.

“Backstairs Tour is Special”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

We've been through maybe ten mansions over the years but this tour brings you into the cellar, the staff quarters, even the roof (what a great view of the harbor and bridge!). Guide was knowledgable and took her time to show everything.

Servants tour was very worthwhile - interesting to get the behind the scenes look of the mansion. The house was also very interesting.
