Owner description: In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

“Hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

We bought tickets which are good for the Breakers + one of the Elms, Rosecliff, Marble House, etc. and we eventually went to the Breaker and Marble House. A self guided tour with a headset is included in the ticket which I think is the key to the enjoyment of the tour.

There every tourist uses the self guided tour so every one follows the same route. It is also because every one listens to the headset which tremendously decreases overall noise level. I enjoyed the tour so much because the quality of the audio guide was good, which makes tourist listen attentively, and you learn the history much better.

The mansion is very well maintained, and I was a little surprised why it is not more well-known and popular. It shows the history of how one of the wealthiest family in history and their background. I would even compare it to some of the palaces which are world-class tourist destination. To be frank, this is the one I enjoy the most.

If you are going to visit the Breakers and the other mansions, I would recommend visiting the Breakers last, as it is the largest of all and visiting it last gives you better expectation. They also have parking lots for the Breakers and Marble House, which is right across the street.

“Beautiful!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

The mansions were great! We did 4 tours in one day, which is a little much, but we only had an afternoon. The self tours are a must, you can listen to as much or as little as you want. The mansions are all so beautiful and we were able to see a lot in each mansion. There is food available at a couple of the mansions, the sandwiches are made by a local restaurant and were very good.

“Beautiful and full of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013 via mobile

We took the tour of The Breakers Vanderbilt Mansion. Grounds were beautiful with lush gardens, a huge children's playhouse, and terrace overlooking the ocean. The inside was a self guided tour with a headset. You toured at your own pace. It was more extraordinary than the grounds.

Breakers, The Elms, MArble House and more. ALso see Rosecliff and make sure to let the yoiung kids run around on the lawns after they see the spectacular insides of these Mansions. Fireplaces big enough for parents to stand in!

“Must see the Mansions in Newport”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013 via mobile

We visited Newport the last week of June 2013 and purchased the 5 mansion ticket online prior to our visit. The Breakers and Marble House were our favorites. The self guided tours with audio headsets made touring the mansions easy and allowed the visitor extra information if desired. I recommend purchasing the ticket prior to your visit to lessen time waiting in line. I also recommend visiting the warf area off Americas Cup avenue. Lots of historic homes and quaint shopping and restaurants.
