Owner description: Located along the legendary Ocean Drive in Newport, RI, Gooseberry Beach is a private beach club open to the public. Come and enjoy the most beautiful beach in Newport, with its white sand and clear calm ocean waters. Gooseberry is the perfect family beach for swimming, snorkeling or building sand castles. We have chair rentals, changing rooms, and showers for our guests. Open 9-5. Visit Gooseberry Cafe which offers great beach food.

Calm waters can be found at Gooseberry Beach. We visit this beach everytime we go to Newport. It is clean with great views of the shore line. They have changing rooms and bathrooms on premise. The only downfall is the seaweed. It can get quite smelly during low tide. There is a fee to use the beach but parking is close to the entrance.

Nice, clean sand, friendly, calm water, great views, etc. The best beach I've been to in a long time. The changing rooms were in good condition and the rest rooms were clean. Worth the extra few minutes drive - or walk from the mansions area like we did.

This is arguably the best beach in Newport, which a wonderful vacation place but it really lacks wonderful beaches. The main beach in Newport is actually one of the most terrible beaches I have ever been to. Gooseberry is not bad and definitely better than any other beaches open to the public in Newport. First, it has parking ($20), then showers, toilets, changing cabanas which are all decent. Also, it has a nice atmosphere as it is small (a cove) with nice sand. Why not perfect? It has seaweed and little sea bugs that bite, although not nearly as bad as other Newport beaches. Also, since it is quite small, we really were not able to walk our stroller to make our 2-year old fall asleep, which we usually do at other Rhode Island beaches.

My name is Ellie. R. My family and myself were near gooseberry beach club on 6/19/2011. We helped a family whom their 7 year old son, fell down on the cliffs and had a heavy bleeding on the back of his head. We contacted the police, and waited till ambulance came and picked them up to the near by hospital. We were shaken and got so exhausted, in the middle of the day and needed to use the bathroom to wash up. When we arrived at the Gooseberry beach and asked very kindly to use the bathroom, they declined. My 20 year old son was so surprised and tried to reason with them, but they were attempting to call the security on us, so we had no choice but leaving.
Just wanted to share this with the people to read this comment and ask them to think twice about being the member of this private beach club. With the employees that are trained to act as a robot and not having the human heart in cases of emergencies. I will keep them in my prayers!
After all, we are all one....

Peace be with you all!

Ellie. R

The best beach in Newport. Not as crowded as Easton's, has parking unlike Reject's, sand in gorgeous unlike Fort Adams. As far as the seaweed report above all of the beach's in the area have seaweed depending on recent weather. The only times I have ever seen much at Gooseberry is when there was a storm the night before and then the other beaches are loaded even worse.

The one downside I would say is that it is in a cove so there are no waves. this is a big plus when you are with little kids but maybe not as exciting for older ones. However there is a platform and a couple of large rocks to swim out to so older kids do seem to enjoy it too.
