I had often driven over the Newport Bridge and seen the Naval War College from a distance, but this was my first real visit. The college itself continues to serve an important role in training officers as well as enhancing the development of international relations. We were celebrating my father-in-law's birthday and, as someone who served in the navy during WWII, he really enjoyed this attraction. Although I found the naval and aviation history of the area very interesting, I was most impressed by the building itself. Prior to being purchased by the Navy, it was actually home to the poor who farmed the surrounding property. Set on beautiful Narragansett Bay, the views are also simply spectacular!

Its tucked away on the grounds of the War College so it gets a little complicated to get there. You must call the day prior if you are a US citizen, stop at the Pass office with your ID to get a car pass. Then you need to go through the gate to get on the base where they check your ID again. All that being said, it was very interesting and focused on the naval and aviation history of the area. It is fairly small - less than 1-2 hours to see it all - but worth the trip.

For something different to do while vacationing in Newport this Fall, I visited the U.S. Naval War College Museum. I was so impressed by each and every exhibit, art displays and various presentations. I literally spend hours going from floor to floor trying to take in as much of our rich naval history as possible. It doesn't matter if you're an adult, a child, military personnel, civilian, historian, male or female...there is something of interest for everyone. It is great family fun and it's free! I will definitely go back again, since several of the exhibits change throughout the year.

As recommended, I called a day ahead to make a reservation. When I arrived, I was on the list:) After everyone showed ID and the vehicle registration was logged, we proceeded through the gate to the museum. Before arriving, we knew nothing about this museum or the Navy in Newport.
We were both impressed with the amount of information and the education of how pivotal Newport was for many things Navy - from it being the temporary Naval Academy to the torpedo development and testing.
It was quite enlightening and we would go back again. Would only be good for teenagers interested in the Navy. A good free attraction
