Although the Fort was nothing spectular it is still worth a visit. Our guide was fairly informative, if repetitious, but overall covered a good bit of the way the fort would have protected the harbour. Kids may not find this very interesting though. More narrative than hands-on.

Pack up a picnic and take your bike during sunset. It's beatiful and warm to watch the boats go by on the water. They also have nice fairs and events here during the summer. It's a nice drive down ocean drive to get there going the long way.

We took the tour of the Fort and very much enjoyed it! Very informative, great interpretive tour and signage, and the flashlight portion of the tour was some unexpected fun! Hear they sometimes offer 'ghost tours' - could be interesting...

Fort Adams was touted as the largest fort of its kind in its day. Impressive. State Park runs guided tours though its massive structure. Grounds are well-kept and location is worth the visit for the views of the harbor, the bay and its mouth. Only thing that keeps its rating at 4 stars is fact that the fort isn't open to the public without guides. Understand it is a cost issue.

Our cruise ship docked right at the fort and we had a fabulous lobster/clam bake that was followed by a guided tour. Steve was fantastic. He was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and clearly loves his job. There were only six of us that stuck around for the tour, and the other 80 people from the cruise do not know that they missed a wonderful experience.

The fort is enormous, but we only walked a short distance across the parade. We did go up a set of potentially treacherous steps, but the view was worth it. It is the location of the Newport Jazz Fest and I would absolutely go back for that. A section has been converted into up to date living quarters for school groups, scout troops, or any group that wants to use it. Could be a little creepy/spooky at night...Just before we were there at the end of August/start of September, apparently there was a zombie obstacle course that took place on site.

We went into the section that was converted from housing cannons to being officers quarters which do need to be restored and preserved, through the moat like center 'kill zone' and into the tunnels underneath. Flashlights were provided, as was the option to go through the smaller branches of other tunnels.

The jail is in the gift shop, but don't miss seeing the cells and imagining being there in winter with the cold wind coming across the water...Or for that matter, anywhere in the fort itself.
