Fort Adams State Park which is on the other side of the Newport Cove brings quite a different view of the area. On the west side of the Park you can view the entrance of Newport Harbor where you can see huge ocean liners come by on there way in and out of Newport. On the Harbor side all you can see are thousands of sail boats of all shapes and sizes anchored out waiting for that blustery day. Fort Adams is where some of the summer festivals are held.

By chance we found Fort Adams State Park while in Newport. We were trying to kill some time before the shops opened. The fort was HUGE and we decided that we would take the tour since the buildings looked intriguing. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable and friendly. We had never toured anything like this before and found it amazing how the fort was designed. The guided tours are the way to go as you are allowed to enter locked areas that are not open for self guided tours. The tunnels were really fantastic! Our tour group had the option of not entering them but we all wanted to see them. It made me think how did these men enter these tunnels day after day. The location is so beautiful on Narragansett Bay. You can see the bridge, the boats and the shoreline. Worth the trip.

I'm not a huge history buff and I had a great time on the tour here. It's only a few dollars more for a guided tour and it's worth it, you get to explore more rooms that are usually locked and up on the roof. Walking through the tunnels underneath the fort was my favorite part. Our tour guide was great, he was friendly and professional and he didn't leave anything out.

I've been to Newport loads of times but this was my first tour of Fort Adams. We took the ferry over from Jamestown and spent a couple of hours. It is in a beautiful spot right on the bay. We took a guided tour and were bombarded with all sorts of interesting information! Definitely a worthwhile attraction!

But it's a wonderful site. Eisenhower used to vacation here on the property. Maybe he felt that the enemy had no chance of a retaliatory invasion with that big fort right there guarding the harbor. The fishing off the pier is great too.
