“Go all the way”

After visiting the breakers we did the cliff walk to the very end,and then walked all the way back to the cruise ship.Take water on a warm day as there are no facilities and it is a long walk. Good walking shoes are required as the terrain changes quite a bit and you have to crawl over some rocks. Its not a rugged trail but it is far from groomed, so be prepared. You can take an early exit off the trail but i think the last part is the best. Take a map(available at the visitor center) as it makes it easier getting to the exits, the end and back to Newport. The walk back takes you along Bellevue Ave and several mansions. It was the highlite of our day in Newport . Take No. 6 bus from Visitor center to the breakers mansion(a 1.2 miles walk with a bit uphill)

“The best thing to do in Newport out of season”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

The cliff walks in and around Canford Cliffs & Sandbanks in Poole, Dorst (UK) are probably just as stunning in terms of sea views etc. but of course they do not have Vanderbilt houses etc. (if such are what turns you on). Sadly, the effects of Hurricane Sandy meant that - when we visited - the latter part of the walk was closed off due to cliff erosion; but it was certainly well worth doing. If anything, the pretentious housing of Cliff Walk was an unfortunate distraction to the wonderful sea views of rugged rocks and crashing waves. Certainly something to do in Newport - sorely needed out of season.- once you have got used to the sight of the wonderful yachts in dry dock around the Harbourside.

“Cliff Walk: A must in Newport”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

The Cliff Walk is a wonderful way to spend part of the day in Newport. High above the ocean, the walk is stunning and parallels the famous Bellevue Avenue where the Newport "cottages" are found. If a walker doesn't want to walk the entire Cliff Walk, there are many ways to exit the Walk along the way. Cliff Walk is a definite "don't miss" in wonderful Newport.

“A definite "Don't Miss" whilst in Newport”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

The Cliff Walk was a real highlight of our stay in Newport. We were fortunate with the weather - there wasn't a cloud in the sky and this made photo opportunities plentiful. The sun was shimmering off the sea and it was so peaceful. As for the mansions - well, what can you say, they are just out of this world. To think these are/were holiday homes in most cases, used for a few weeks a year is just staggering. The only word of caution I would say is although it is only 3.5 miles long the last third or so of the walk is quite craggy. Very different to the paved walkways at the outset, so make sure you wear trainers as a minimum. Took 2.5 hours including short stops for photos etc.

“Well worth it”

Awesome walk - watch out for the waves if the tide is in! Fantastic mansions on the sea front. Breakers is awesome and much better to view from here than the road
