Well placed audio tour makes this great house a pleasure to visit. One house ticket can be extended after the visit to the multi house visit. We were only in town for a day otherwise we would have visited more.

We started at the Breakers, and the Newport Reservation Society had it all organised. Audio tours in many languages explained the rooms and the people who lived there. Very good, however they even had additional stories that you could listen to about fabric, paintings and servants. I suggest you listen to all that interest you. This will add time to your tour but well worth it. With the cost of the first tour we were entitled to 2 additional mansions for just $6 pp per mansion which never expired. As we had several days, we did two more of their mansions and were glad we did. They are all different and interesting.

Toured The Breakers first. It is a self-guided audio tour (pair of headphones and player the size of a cellphone). Liked the option of hearing more detailed stories in each room. Consider purchasing the ticket that allows you to see several mansions. Some are now closed ("off-season") but ticket is good for a year.

It’s the biggest and most ostentatious but also the most expensive to visit, however the history was fascinating and the decor was incredible. There is a nice cafeteria and restrooms and plenty of parking space. You should definitely use the complimentary audio guide and listen to some of the extra bits in it too. Well worth a visit.

The house was very neat to see. They give you listening devices for a self guided tour. They had a kids version for the younger ones which they loved. It was so fascinating to hear the story behind this house. We also went on to see one of the other houses, the Breakers was our favorite of the two.
