This was by far my favorite of the two mansions. Love all that gold. Love that you can listen as you tour each room and can go at your own paste. Wish we could have toured the servants quarters as well. Love that they were button to press for service and the telephone by the stairway to the servants quarters.

I had seen it twice before, but each time is impressive. The cost may seem a bit steep ($26 per person), but the staff is extra helpful, and each room is memorable. If you just have time to see one Newport mansion, this is it. It helps if you like Italian Renaissance architecture--I do. For me, the most memorable "room" is the balcony on the 2nd floor overlooking the lawn and the ocean. If I had been a Vanderbilt, that's where I would have spent my days.

Great self guided tour you can go at your own pace and really take in all the history. It was breath taking to see the restored gorgeous mansion.

Husband wanted to see a Newport mansion so he picked The Breakers. Yes, it’s huge and very gaudy. Opulent, over the top as any rich person would want their home to be.

I was impressed. The gardens are beautiful. Surprisingly Mr. Vanderbilt’s room did not have an ocean view.

This is the American version of Downton Abbey. Servants had their living quarters on the 3rd floor. Call buttons for them throughout the house.

After reading about the Newport Mansions, I think Breakers is the best one to must see.
