“Incredible service and truly warm hospitality”
Reviewed April 9, 2009

This isn't exactly a happening or touristy corner of Buffalo - this is right across the street from Buffalo General Hospital and connected to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. However, if you're looking for surprisingly good value for money lodgings and an amazing staff who are doing their very best to make you feel welcome, then you're definitely in the right place. Besides, nightlife and tourist attractions are just a short drive away - or you could even ask the hotel's free shuttle to drop you off there if you'd like.

The rooms are immaculately clean; the only quibbles I have would be with the somewhat tired 80s/90s décor which, if boring, does offer up a few grins (the odd, faux-Deco gold-plated bath fixtures were v. amusing). All of it is well maintained, though - no scuff marks on walls, no holes in the carpets. The hotel was apparently originally built largely to cater to families who needed to stay close to one of the nearby hospitals for an extended stretch of time; there's a stonking huge fridge in every room, a sink, a microwave, and Wolfgang Puck coffee and tea. Yes, business travelers, you can fit an entire pizza box in the fridge.

Beds were wonderfully comfortable, and the duvets were welcome; watching it snow outside from under the covers, I felt wonderfully at home and pampered. There are more pillows than I knew what to do with, and enough towels that I could probably re-carpet the room with them if I wanted to. Toiletries are good quality Neutrogena, replenished every day, and it was great getting both the local paper and USA Today every morning.

Valet parking is reasonably well organized with super-friendly parking attendants. Check-in was efficient and welcoming. It isn't often you stay at a hotel where service feels this genuine and heartfelt; these aren't corporate drones reading a script dreamt up by some marketing agency - these are honest people doing their best to make you feel welcome here.

The lounge downstairs offers a great array of reasonably priced drinks, there's a little kiosk where you can buy pop to take up to your room, and staff were very helpful in recommending other places to eat if you're looking for a change of pace.

Finally, one very important thing to me is noise: this place is quiet. Really, really quiet. Even though you're surrounded by hospitals, you'll never hear an ambulance siren or even your neighbors. I'm a light sleeper, and I really enjoyed the peace and quiet.

During a week's stay, the only minor problems I experience were these: the first room I received had no Internet connection available (fixed with a move to another room). The second room I had did not have the advertised recliner (unlike the first), but this didn't bother me enough to ask the staff for a better chair. Finally, the Au Bon Pain café (which may or may not be part of the hotel) has a problem with displayed prices being about 30% cheaper than what rings up at the register - but they did correct the register amount when asked.

Seriously, if you're thinking about staying here, I can't imagine there being a more relaxing, welcoming environment to do it. This is a rare find.

I travel 200+ nights a year, and have been coming to the DoubleTree Hotel in Buffalo for over 8 months now. In that span of time, I have seen the hotel evolve from being ordinary to becoming an exceptional standard for the industry!

The staff I encountered this January were absolutely incredible, as if everyone went to "Smile School" and graduated with high honors. The Front Desk is diligent and a great first impression. Very quick and eager to assist.

The restaurant is amazing, and one of Buffalo's best kept secrets. Its a grill-based menu, so don't expect a filet, but they have a burger and wings that are second to none! The staff are competent and very personable.

I've come to respect the neighborhood, as it IS NOT the "ghetto" as some of these suburbanite travelers think. This is one of America's oldest cities, and the hotel just happens to be a block or so away from a much older section.

It's located in the heart of Western New York's largest medical corridor and has a tunnel connecting to the East Coast's premier Cancer Institute. On top of that, its only a 10 minute walk to a bar scene full of great drink specials, live music, and 4 am last call!

The DoubleTree deserves much more than the last several reviews have lead on to believe. I will only stay at this Hotel, regardless of how much more business I have here.

We went for the 4th of July long weekend. The location is pretty scary and the whole area looks like a ghost town. It is good for people going to the hospital or the cancer institute. Food options are limited. Directions are confusing. We would have never reached if not for the GPS system. The printed maps we had were a total failure. Parking is costly and far off. Also since the neighbourhood is very dicey you need to walk thru the hospital to get to the hotel after parking (about 3 blocks).
For the hotel, first the keys did not work. Then we got that exchanged and found out that the tv had no remote control. asked for one and got a non-working remote. The bath room was not restocked. Not a good experience. We normally stay at Hampton Inn or Hilton Garden inn and have had excellent times but I would not stay in a Double tree in future.

I stay at this location every time I am in Buffalo. I travel there a great deal for work. The Staff is fantastic, food is limited but great, and the rooms are safe and clean.

I stayed here using HHonors Points. It is located next to Roswell Cancer Center and across from Buffalo General Hospital. First of all we asked for an early check in and they took our number and told us they would call. They never did. We arrived back at the hotel at 2:40pm and were told that check in was at 3. OK, so you have no clean rooms and it is 20 minutes until everyone can check in? I do not think so. The front desk clerk was not friendly at all. We valet parked our car and had to give the keys to the desk clerk. No bellman in sight anywhere. We called for our car 20 minutes before needing it and it was still not there when we came downstairs. We ordered room service and it took 1 hour and 15 minutes. The worst tasting room service food I have ever had bar none! The area around the hotel is not a good place to be outside at night especially if you are a woman. No bellman available for check out either. We were put into a room on the 2nd floor after asking for an upper floor. The hotel is worn and in need of renovation. The only bright point of this stay is the chocloate chip cookies at check in. Also they have the old 19 inch tv's in the room.

Spent one night here so my boyfriend could run the Buffalo Marathon. Room was clean and large, if a little dated. Hallways were clean as well. For the money, the room was perfectly fine.

A few issues, however- the walls seem to be rather thin, as I was able to make out full conversations when our neighbours were on the telephone.

Other issue was Au Bon Pain. Sunday morning, when I wandered in, there was barely anything available, and a fairly gruff and overworked staff. I waited quite a while to be acknowledged, and when I asked for a bagel, the server put on plastic gloves, then went to handle money in the till before finally grabbing my bagel! As though the gloves were to keep her hands clean and not to keep the food sanitary!
Ew. Anyway, overall, the hotel was fine for a quick visit. Neighbourhood was indeed a little rough, but there's really nowhere to walk in downtown Buffalo anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.

I spent 3 days here on business and found this hotel is grossly understaffed and those that work here are overworked juggling more than 1 job. Tried to order room service and phone was never answered after 3 phone call attempts. Called the front desk to request room service help and no one answered phone.
On the 3rd and last day of my stay, went to their Au Bon Pain restaurant to have breakfast and they were out of orange juice, milk, bananas...one can only speculate why a food manager can't project the hotel's food needs.
Trying to retrieve my car from the valet service took more than 1/2 hour each day.
Agree with other posters that surrounding area is not the safest to walk around.
This hotel is convenient for anyone who has a need to be at the hospital across the street.
Rooms are spacious and clean.
