“Best burgers!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

We come here often. Love their juicy burgers. The toasted sesame seed roll totally makes it. Seriously you must try. I always order it medium. The sides are good. We have also had the perogis too. Nice beer selection. The inside reminds me of your local pub; nothing fancy. Service is usually a bit on the slow side, but it's usually the bartender taking care of the dining room too. Be patient it's worth the wait. They only take cash so stop by an ATM first.

“Best Burger”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

Just one old man makes them, so it takes a very long time but this place is (was) a Buffalo secret. Huge burgers made by hand and worth the wait. They also have good pierogis.

“Try and catch them when they are open”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

The burger is quite serious here. Great beer selection too. They just seem to have weird hours and are not always open when you think they should be.

“Best burger in Buffalo!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2012

I’ve been to three places noted for their burgers in the western New York area, and The Sterling still ranks #1. Burgers are hand formed, cooked to order, come with any accompaniments you might like (choice of cheese, mushrooms, and standards like lettuce-tomato-onion), along with excellent sides including fries, potato salad, and macaroni salad (the latter two home made and excellent). Portions are substantial but not overwhelming. Fridays you can get a fabulous fish fry, as well as a fisherman’s platter or fried shrimp (I can vouch for the quality of the shrimp — large, not greasy, ample portion — yum!) There are other menu choices including homemade pierogies (occasionally), sausage platters, and others sandwiches. There are also homemade desserts if you’re lucky and they don’t run out.

“Great dive bar dedicated to craft beer with solid bar food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2012

The Sterling is one of the first places to turn me on to craft beer. They were the first in town to carry and promote Cleveland's Great Lakes beers. The rare steak sandwich paired with a cold bottle of Orval from Belgium is a match made in heaven. The bar food is substantial, reasonably priced, and tasty...although far from healthy. Burgers are big and juicy, chicken fingers are huge, wings are done well, and they feature some eastern european fare in the form of pierogi, cabbage, and sausages from Spars. The food is good, but if you are insanely hungry, it can be a wait. If you've seen what they cook on, you'd understand why. The grill is not much bigger than a college dorm hotplate, but it gets the job done.
More often than not, you will find the owners manning the bar and the kitchen...that is whenever they are open. They are often closed on the weekends and some weeks in the summer they are closed for vacation...so good luck. Their listed phone number has been out of service for years, and it adds to the old fashioned, lazy charm this place has. Also, no credit cards accepted. They are a generator and outhouse away from being completely off-the-grid.
Perfect no-frills place to have some pints with friends, play some darts, and have a hearty sandwich!
