Everyone who goes to Buffalo ends up at least once at the Anchor Bar and Chefs.
Chefs provide big bowl of pasta drenched in a very sugary tomato sauce which is then covered in melted cheese. If you liked Chef-Boy-Are-De from a can when you were a kid, this place is for you. It has lots of good reviews but there are a lot of much better places to go.

Chef's in downtown Buffalo is a long established restaurant favored by politicians, hockey fans (don't go on home game night!) and regular folks. Well-lit parking is directly across the street. A new bar and expanded entrance gives patrons a comfortable place to wait for their table. Reservations taken and suggested if your time is limited. This place almost always has a wait!
I can't resist the eggplant parm! Deliciously fried, ladened with sauce and smothered with cheese-what's not to love? I get the full order so I can have leftovers! The bread is always crispy, served with butter or oil, salad fresh, basic with a tasty homemade Italian dressing that can't be beat. The sauce is delicious-now available in local markets...service efficient and fast.
Last visit was in the new smallish banquet room right of the main entrance-a very nice oak paneled room-perfect for 20 or so guests.

You just don't see places like this anymore. A fun family restaurant, very old-fashioned in decor and the friendliness of the service. Our server knew several people at her other tables by name, which is always a good sign. The spaghetti sauce is legendary, though the marinara I had was quite sweet-- which is fine if that's to your taste. My husband's spaghetti parm was appropriately decadent, but since I can't eat dairy I had fewer options. Definitely elted cheese on almost everything here! Still, that's not a problem for most people-- and it was still a wonderful time.

Forty years around Buffalo, and the Cheap Gourmets still can't figure out what the big deal is about Chef's. While the family is reknowned for its charitable work, and deservedly so, the food here is no better than that of many places charging far less, and there is sort of an understated impression that you should thank them for letting you in the door. The popular play "Over the Tavern" has an East Side saloon keeper bringing home dinner from Chef's but he would have done a lot better, for a lot less, at any number of other, less celebrity-oriented locales...

I went there on a Friday evening, the place was packed, I sat at the bar, had a classic large spaghetti with meatballs and tomato sauce, it was great; the barman also brought bread and butter.
