Situated in the historic Lafayette Hotel, this eatery manages to be lavishly historic without being at all stuffy. In a freshly renovated century building, it's spacious, bright and airy, and this in spite of being in the sous-parterre. The menu is quite ambitious, and although it hadn't quite followed through on its ambition when we visited, having only opened three weeks before, we are sure it will mature and its grasp will match its reach. There are smaller and a larger offerings, as well as a pizza oven and a display cases of famous sweet treats. Prices are quite reasonable. While you are there, explore the lovely old Lafayette Hotel, recently renovated, and, one hopes, the shape of things to come in historic downtown Buffalo.
One word of caution, however: a gratuity was added to the bill without our knowledge (for our party of two), and then the VISA slip had an additional line for a tip. Had I not glanced at the bill beforehand, I would have tipped twice, including a tip on the tip! I find this practice to be decidedly unsavory and am sad that anyone feels the need to do this.
