Situated in the historic Lafayette Hotel, this eatery manages to be lavishly historic without being at all stuffy. In a freshly renovated century building, it's spacious, bright and airy, and this in spite of being in the sous-parterre. The menu is quite ambitious, and although it hadn't quite followed through on its ambition when we visited, having only opened three weeks before, we are sure it will mature and its grasp will match its reach. There are smaller and a larger offerings, as well as a pizza oven and a display cases of famous sweet treats. Prices are quite reasonable. While you are there, explore the lovely old Lafayette Hotel, recently renovated, and, one hopes, the shape of things to come in historic downtown Buffalo.
One word of caution, however: a gratuity was added to the bill without our knowledge (for our party of two), and then the VISA slip had an additional line for a tip. Had I not glanced at the bill beforehand, I would have tipped twice, including a tip on the tip! I find this practice to be decidedly unsavory and am sad that anyone feels the need to do this. Check your check before you pay!

Beautiful new spot for Butterwood desserts now with fine dining....located downstairs in the Hotel Lafayette in an intimate spot.....the desserts are their specialty and never fail to impress...the service leaves a lot to be desired....went for dessert and coffee after dinner and waited 45min for our order after seating....need to fix that problem, otherwise we will be back to try dinner

We like this place...and want to support it. But the service has been inattentive each time we went. Please make it better so we will come back!

We just went here for my birthday a few nights ago. Even though it just opened a month ago, they have the service and food down pat. Everything on the menu sounded amazing, and in my party of 6 everyone was extremely impressed with what they ordered. I loved the ambiance. Suggestion to first-time visitors: make sure you enter through the Hotel Lafayette lobby. The hotel itself has been so beautifully restored to its original grandeur, it's a site worth seeing. Butterwood Sweet and Savory is a perfect addition to this architecturally significant space in downtown Buffalo. Also, a number of tables around us turned over a few times while we were there because people just came in to order desserts. I love that you can do either a long, enjoyable dinner like we did or just a sweet treat! The best part is that it's a wallet-friendly price range. For 6 people who were also drinking alcohol (probably 2 drinks a piece), it was only around $50 per person. Probably in part because they have a great "Small Plate" selection which was perfect for the women in the group, also because they have a thorough but affordable wine list.
