In every city I visit, I try to go to its best art museum or gallery. So I was quite disappointed when I visited the Albright-Knox last week. I normally wound't mind paying $12 to see great art, but I felt really ripped-off after visiting this museum. In the great space they have, there were less than 100 paintings/works on display. They have very little European art on display. The upstairs galleries were blacked out for their Videoscope presentation of some of the weirdest short videos I have ever seen. I kept asking myself, 'Is this all there is?'

Luckily I stopped by their gift store on the way out and found several outstanding items to take home to my family. This is a case where unfortunately, the gift store was better than the museum.

A delightful space in a wonderful city. The Videosphere exhibit and Sol LeWitt's wall drawing were marvelous, even to two hard-to-impress teens. Fabulous gift shop.

The Abright-Knox is constantly changing, with new art and new festivals and attractions! Went there for a jazz show by an African Group, saw the new huge art exhibits, and went for the Music is Art Festival hosted by Goo Goo Dolls own singer Robby Takac. Great Venue!

The main features of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery are worth a few days exploration. But it could be the special shows that are periodically featured that make the jewels in this crown of art galleries. The sculpture court is remarkable in the various artists who are represented here and worth a visit on their own. There is a floor of modern and contemporary pieces and a floor for some of the finest European art in this area. It is the various shows brought in for shorter periods of time that give an on-going sense of perpetuity to the gallery as there is always something changeing and worth another visit.

As someone who has lived in New York City and DC, I'm a little jaded when it comes to incredible museums. $12 seems a little steep for a somewhat small collection, but it was still a very pleasant afternoon, and they did have an impressive number of pieces by extremely well-known artists from the roots of French impressionism to contemporary LED screen art. It's actually a very good place for someone studying art history because much of the work is highly representational of what each artist was famous for. When you see works by Braque, Picasso, Mondrian, Miro, Dali, Di Chirico, Cezanne, Pollock, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Giacometti among others, you are seeing clear examples of the movements that made them famous even if the individual paintings aren't famous themselves. They also have works by Georgia O'Keefe, Monet, Frankenthaler, Seurat, and a large area for traveling exhibits. If the weather is nice, walk behind the museum and treat yourself to a rest on a bench by beautiful Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park.
