Let me begin with my favorite aspect of Little America Flagstaff. The two-mile hiking trail. That's right, a gorgeous and serene two-mile hike through a 500-acre ponderosa pine forest right outside the manicured property. The fragrance alone of the forest is worth five stars. Little American owns the land the trail is on. I hope it stays natural and doesn't get developed or sold. Amazing it's offered and right there to enjoy during your stay. Walk, hike, bike or jog it.
So, the hiking trial would not matter as much if the room and service wasn't top notch but both were. My brother and I got quiet rooms in one of the recently redone buildings. Little American just nailed it. (Your mileage may differ if you are in a building with the old décor and/or facing the highway.) Our rooms had a strong nod to the western and Native American heritage of the area but were also completely up to date with great, no-hassle Wi-Fi, room refrigerators, large bathrooms, a huge flat screen TV, lots of electrical outlets, etc. The decor is earth tones mixed with beautiful raw wood used for the bed headboard and desk. Room is very large too. I was half lost being in there by myself. There was even a recycle bin in the room, which I appreciated - in a place so beautiful I felt very irresponsible throwing glass and plastic away in many places around Flagstaff that didn't offer recycling. The bed was super comfortable and plenty of great pillows - why can't more hotels get this basic thing right? Room was quiet too.
I revealed in the layout of the hotel but could see how some would not like the relatively long walk to the front desk and or the restaurant. I think there are four buildings with rooms and the main building. It’s laid out like a compound, winding paved walking paths, beautiful pool and spa, benches to sit on, flowers and really beautiful grounds.
Service for the hotel was outstanding. I forgot my razor and toothbrush, they had both for me to use at no cost. Room was immaculate each night although I tend to be neat so not a whole lot of cleaning up. My last morning I thought I needed a late checkout and not problem, even though I ended up not needing it. Other hotels could learn some lessons here.
This review is primarily about the rooms and the hotel but I do want to mention the restaurant and bar area. Truth be told, the restaurant re-do is not as successful as the rooms, some of the materials look/feel manufactured – not natural. The old restaurant had a really cool old world, old Flagstaff/Route 66 elegance and charm about it. The new one is more open and airy but feels like some average high-end chain restaurant. As circumstances would have it, I did not eat dinner at the restaurant but the old one had really good food – it was my grandparent’s favorite restaurant. I have no idea how the quality of food may or may not have carried over? My brother and I did have a beer in the bar one night and that was great, a good selection of local brews and the server was fantastic. Friendly, funny, helpful, actually very funny. Kudos to her. Fire going in the distance was a nice touch.
My brother and I did have breakfast in the restaurant one morning and that was a major miss. Completely out of sync with the rest of our experience. Bad service couldn’t even get coffee refills. The buffet food was average at best. Soggy bacon, scrambled eggs were tough and bordering on nasty, gravy had no flavor, just not good. The only thing better was the fresh fruit. So keep the very good fresh fruit and fix everything else. My brother ordered from the menu and his omelet was pathetic. Small, over cooked, hardly any filling, really? I expected a good if not great breakfast given the accommodations, the setting and the price. Unless they fix it, I highly recommend going elsewhere for breakfast.
But discounting the lousy breakfast and focusing on the hotel itself, it is seriously well done. I will be staying at Great America again. Whether I eat there remains to be seen.
