“Surprisingly Nice”
Reviewed May 19, 2010

Best Westerns are often Crap Shoots. Driving up this one doesn't look like much but as soon as you walk up to the desk you realize that this one is in the upper tier. We were upgraded to a two-bath suite which was wonderful. The whole place is a little old but very well maintained and cleaned. Breakfast was very good & my wife was thrilled that they had yogurt. A train roared by at about 4:30 but I am sure that every motel along route 66 (almost everything in Flagstaff) had a similar experience. It is a fairly short drive to "Historic Downtown" which has many surprising restaurants; we opted for the Mountain Oasis. Parking downtown is not in abundant supply.

Thank you for your kind review. It is true that we are an older hotel, built in the earlier 60's along old Route 66 and the railroad tracks. We do try to keep the hotel in good shape to compete with the newer hotels in town. While the trains still roll through town frequently, the hotels in Flagstaff are very happy that they are not blowing their horns and whistles any longer. It is so much quieter now than it used to be prior to March 1, 2010.

As evidenced in other posts, our free continental breakfast is above average. We listen to what our guests are telling us, and because of that we recently added the yougurt with granola, mini-bagels w/ creme cheese, and honey for our tea drinkers.

Thanks again,

If you are traveling through Flaggstaff the Best Western Pony Soldier hotel is a very nice place to spend the night. The breakfast in the morning is one of the best ones I have had in a motel. It is a hot breakfast and the area of the breakfast is comfortable. The staff is very friendly. I would suggest that you call ahead and reserve a room.

we spent there 2 nights. Hotel is clean, room spacious and quiet (we didn't hear any train) breakfast excellent (especially wafers :) ).
It's always better to make a reservation via BW website and get fully paid in advance rate which is really good.

I received very good service from the front desk clerk at check in and her helping me locating my points of interest.

The attendant at breakfast also was very helpful.

This older Best Western is typical of the chain. Rooms have been renovated and was clean and comfortable and resonably quiet. There is no elevator for 2nd floor access, so opt for a lower level if you have walking problems. Breakfast is in a separate building but was not a good as other Best Westerns. It offered cereal's hard boiled egg's, waffels, and drinks which was OK but could improve on other hot items (not impressed) . Location was adequate for reaching down town, a short drive. There are a few decent restaurants nearby. I would stay here again.

Thank you for your reveiw. Best Westerns have standard requirements for thier breakfasts. We actually exceed those standards and compared to the chain in general, our guest service scores are higher than the average. We also offer "Bisuits & Sausage Gravy" which is very popular. We plan on adding yogurt soon, and perhaps a variation of the gravy for the biscuits. Thank you again for your comments!

Very nice and basic hotel located on Route 66, easy to find. Staff friendly and room was very clean. Slept VERY well after a day of hiking at Walnut Canyon and Montezuma's Castle. Nearby and walkable are an Italian restaurant, Chinese restaurant and Miz Zips is half a block away. I had the open face hot beef sandwich and it was quite good. The warm cherry pie with a scoop of ice cream was AWESOME!

The trains didn't bother me in the least. Slept like a charm. Didn't try the breakfast though. I will be back in September so I might then.
