“Well worth the quick stop”
Review of Red Mountain Trail

This is a nice hike between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. Located at mile marker 247, just on the west side of the road. The hike is only 1.5 miles one way and well marked. You are really missing out if you don't hike up past the ladder into the canyon with the steep, lava rock walls. Everything before that is just a stroll in the woods along a wash. Well worth the quick diversion off the highway. No support facilities and the road and parking area are dirt. Road and parking are maintained so any car can make it; I made it in a rental Prius so I'm not making it up. Bring your own water.

I was very pleased with this hike. It is a great way to spend an afternoon if you are looking for a hike that is not too challenging.

This trail should not be missed. It is only 1.5 miles one way. You are rewarded by incredible rock formations in the cinder cone, extending up towards the convoluted red walls. I could not believe my eyes.

Not far out of Flagstaff and on the way to the Grand Canyon, this trail provides a couple hours of very interesting terrain where you can choose how much or how little effort you want to give it. The access to the trail from the parking lot is deceptive--flat and dusty-- almost boring. But once you reach the base of the mountain area the terrain changes quickly and you'll have to decide how much and how far you want to climb. I recommend hiking boots. This is a great place for some spectacular photos.

What a great ending to this trail. Much more of a walk than a hike. The geologic features at the end of the trail are amazing! If you're nimble you can climb up some of the cascading features and have a great view of the valley. Awesome echoes up here!
