“Best B&B we have ever stayed at to date”
Reviewed November 18, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the England House B&B for three nights in October while visiting Flagstaff. We usually book B&B's when we travel and can say "hands down" this was the best in all areas. The owners Richard and Laurel made us feel so at home and also gave all guests the privacy we wanted. They were such gracious hosts. The multi course gourmet breakfasts were a delight to the senses. We enjoyed sitting in the kitchen drinking a cup of coffee in the morning while watching our hosts prepare our breakfast. This was a fun time meeting the other guests and getting to know our hosts better. The spacious rooms were beautifully decorated with antiques, fresh flowers and a very comfortable bed with silky soft linens. Everything from complementary wine, beer, other beverages, cookies and even ice cream were at our disposal should we want it. The hosts also were the best of tour guides when we needed a recommendation for dinner, a good hike to view the aspens in color or great places to visit in downtown Flagstaff. They even shared a favorite spot to view the Grand Canyon that is not known by many. We had a romantic picnic there with only a couple other visitors in sight. We highly recommend you stay here and get a chance to meet Richard and Laurel Dunn. You will be so glad you did.

Thanks to Richard and Laura we had a very enjoyable stay at the England House. The house has been, as all reviewers have said, lovingly restored and the hosts have thought of everything to make you feel at home. Fresh flowers in the clean and nicely decorated rooms, good beds, free drinks, yummy cookies, good(not too sweet) breakfasts, you name it. They even took care of some laundry for us!

The only thing that did disturb me slightly were the trains, especially loud because we experienced a storm there. But as also said perhaps this noise pollution will end shortly.
We also enjoyed Flagstaff.
In short, England House is far from home, but if it were closer we would return.

My husband and I recently stayed at the England House for one night in mid-September, and we were extremely pleased with the quality of service and hospitality Richard and Laurel afforded us during our stay. Had I known we would enjoy such a wonderful stay at the England House, I would have changed our trip itinerary to spend a few more nights in Flagstaff.

We had booked the Pantry, but upon our arrival we discovered that Richard and Laurel had upgraded our room to the Song Catcher. The room was tastefully and beautifully decorated (as is the entire house!) and impeccably clean. The bed linens were extremely high quality and freshly pressed; something you expect at the Four Seasons, but certainly not your average B&B!

We arrived in Flagstaff at mid-morning and stopped at the England House at Laurel's suggestion so that they could share their insider tips for our visit to the Grand Canyon. These alone were worth the money we spent on the room! Breakfast the next morning was absolutely delicious... I'm still thinking of that egg souffle, Laurel!

All in all we had a perfect, perfect stay. Every compliment reviewers pay to the England house is absolutely true - so much so that I'm writing my first tripadvisor review ever! Laurel and Richard are so kind, welcoming and gracious. They truly make their guest feel like family and strive to ensure you have the best vacation possible. Book a stay - you won't be disappointed!

We arrived in Flagstaff at 5:30am ending a train trip that originated in St. Paul, Mn with stops of various lengths in West Glacier, Mt.; Portland, Or.; Sacramento, Ca. and Los Angeles, Ca. Our stay in Flagstaff was the longest on our trip and we looked for a place that would provide us with a base for touring the area around Flagstaff. We felt that a B&B would best meet our desires and needs.

An Internet search of B&B's in Flagstaff narrowed our choice to three. The England House was the first one on the three that I contacted. After a 30 minute conversation with Richard, the owner, I was convinced that I need not look any further for a place to stay while in Flagstaff and booked a five night stay with Richard. Before we left home, they mailed us maps of the area and his wife, Laurel included a short note with walking directions from the Train Station to the England House and a message indicating that we should call them as soon as our train arrived in Flagstaff.

I wasn't sure that we should call them at such an early hour. However, after departing our train at 5:30am, I decided that I should probably follow her suggestion and call them rather than just showing up at their front door at that time of the day. When I called, it was obvious that I had awakened Richard from sound sleep. He was very gracious about us rudely waking him up and reiterated the directions to the England House. We were still two blocks from the England House when we say a figure approaching us from the opposite direction. It was Richard.

He helped us with our luggage and allowed us to make ourselves comfortable in the living room of the house. He indicated that we would be included in their breakfast that morning even though we were there hours before the official check-in time. After breakfast, Richard drove me to the airport where I had rented a car for our stay. He waited for me to completed the transaction with the rental agency to make sure that I would find my way back to the England House.

We can concur with all of the positive reviews about the England House that are found on this web site. Richard and Laurel are fantastic hosts. They made us feel very welcome and went out of their way to take care of all our needs. They even provided a cooler filled with fruit and cookies for our hike to the Secret Place at the Grand Canyon. They help us plan our activities for each of the five days we stayed there and provided us with 6 unique and different breakfasts during our stay.

We have stayed at a number of B&B's and have never had an experience that comes close to matching our stay with Richard and Laurel. They both have a terrific sense of humor and really take an interest in their guests treating them as good or better than family. As I told them before I left, The England House is a special house, but it is the two of them that make it such a pleasure to stay there. We highly recommend The England House and certainly will stay there again if we should ever have the opportunity to visit Flagstaff.

PS: After sleeping on the train for two weeks, we probably had become accustomed to train whistles. We certainly didn't find them to be objectionable during our five day stay.

This is the B&B you dream about! Richard and Laurel are outstanding hosts and should give classes on how to run a B&B. Laurel greeted us at the door, offered us fresh baked cookies, beer, wine, soft drinks etc and gave us a tour of the house that included a ghost story! We stayed in the Song Catcher which is a lovely and comfortable room. We were given several recommendations for dinner - they have all the menus from the local restaurants to aid in your selection. Breakfast was INCREDIBLE - right out of Bon Appetit or Gourmet! The hosts friendliness and hospitality encourages interaction between all guests. When we were ready to leave, we were given personalized directions and recommendations from Richard along with the directions to the "Secret Spot" at the Grand Canyon which was also incredible. (One warning - it's a bit of a hike to the "spot, but well worth it.). We have stayed in a number of B&Bs but this one was by far the best. The only negative (and this is no fault of the hosts) is that the trains regularly blares their whistles day and night - but even then our hosts thought to provide each guest with earplugs! (Quiet hours are supposed to be enacted shortly by the city of Flagstaff which should relieve this problem.) We wish we had stayed more than one night - if we return to the area, we will make this inn and Flagstaff our base of operations! Great experience - go there!

We were greeted by the innkeeper, Richard, in a manner that made us feel right at home. The inn is charming, comfortable, and has every little detail you will need while you stay there. The England House is a short walk to the Lowell Observatory and historic downtown Flagstaff. Breakfast was grand! We enjoyed chatting with Richard and Lauren, the innkeepers, and the other guests. Sadly, we had to leave after breakfast! We had such a wonderful experience here that we are now planning to return to Flagstaff and the England House soon.

From the moment you arrive at England House and Richard welcomes you “home,” you can tell the comfort of the guests are Richard and Laurel’s #1 priority. They have thought of absolutely everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible from providing menus of the local restaurants, to the tiny book light in the bedroom drawer. They even offered for us to “stop planning your vacation and let us do it for you”, which was a tremendous relief! They know everything about the area and are happy to give you maps and information to get you wherever you want to go. We have stayed in a few dozen B&B’s over 14 years, most of them “upper scale”, and the England House is the best we have stayed in. They have the complete package; friendly and helpful (but not too intrusive) hosts, wonderful breakfasts with natural ingredients, snacks and drinks available all day, all in a beautiful inn with immaculate rooms. They are located within walking distance of historic downtown Flagstaff where many shops and restaurants are located, and just down the street from Lowell’s Observatory. One of the things we find most commonly lacking in many B&B’s is their cleanliness. England House is beautifully decorated as well as spotless. It is obvious Richard and Laurel take pride in their work, and in the inn they have worked so hard to restore. They are the consummate B&B hosts and are happy and willing to help make your stay as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. You will not be disappointed at the England House!
