“Simply the best combination of ambience and menu in Flagstaff”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

My wife and I have been coming here for special occassions and date nights for years. In the winter you can get a table near the fire place. In the summer, you can enjoy an evening outside. The rustic house makes an ideal setting for a gourmet meal in Flagstaff.

The menu is unique but offers broad appeal. Everything is delicious.

Personally, I think kthe have the best staff in town!

“A "Homey" Feeling”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Josephine's Restaurant is situated in a vintage house and immediately gives you the feeling of being in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. There is also a lovely, large outdoor dining patio. The menu is eclectic American with a nice selection of fresh fish that is nicely prepared and hard to find in Arizona. The wait staff is knowledgeable and accommodating and the prices are reasonable. Reservation are a must since this restaurant is popular and for good reason.

“Name Fits the Place”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

Although everyone knows this local restaurant as Josephine's, the formal name, Josephine's Modern American Bistro, is right on. This site is on the list of National Historic Places, and a nice introduction to the "rock houses" you will find in Flagstaff. There is indoor seating in several of the rooms in the house, but try to go when there is outdoor seating on the covered patio (only two or three sets of tables and chairs) or under an umbrella. You may notice the noise from the cars on busy Humphrey's (the road heading to both the Grand Canyon and the Snowbowl ski area) but after awhile, the setting will absorb you.

The "American" in the formal title is appropriate, since many of the dishes have been adapted from comfort food, and you won't be intimidated by European or Asian-fusion influences or ingredients. The menu changes from time to time, but we recommend the crab cakes, macaroni and cheese, and any of the desserts, such as the berry cobbler or whatever is in season. Sandwiches come with a side and are ample, but the salads are not big enough to share.

Josephine's serves lunch, brunch, and dinner, and because of it's location and popularity, we recommend you make a reservation, especially on tourist weekends. In winter, there is a roaring fire in the main dining room, but we suggest you ask to be seated in one of the side room so you won't hear the clatter from the kitchen and bar.

“Its hard to get a better meal!”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Josephine's Bistro may be the best restaurant in all of Flagstaff. Over the years I have eaten there at least a half dozen times and have never been dissapointed. The appetizers are excellent--try the brie or crabcakes! The salads are delicious. The main courses are all execllent. My most recent visit I had the beef tenderloin and it was excellent as usual. It is not a large menu but there are always daily specials and all of the dishes on the menu are excellent. The restaurant is always busy. If you can sit outside if the weather permits. You will not be dissapointed.

“Food was good but pricey and service was a bit stiff.”
Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

We made reservations for Josephine's based on a friend's recommendation. When we got there we were not greeted right away as we watched unsmiling waiters running around looking officious. When finally greeted we told them we had reservations. Despite what looked like empty tables in the cozy front room we were told a table had to be prepared for us. After waiting for five or so more minutes we were ushered to a quiet table in a cold empty back room which smelled slightly of cleaning fluid. At least it was quiet. Our waiter was pleasant enough but seemed very busy. Our table never quite seemed to be on his destination radar.
Our food was all quite good and above average. During the meal it seemed as though the waiters were very busy running around and rearranging tables around us which was slightly distracting.
I felt the food was overpriced for the experience and that the staff is too stiff and unwelcoming.
