Description: Welcome to The Cottage, formerly The Cottage Place. Join Chef Scott Heinonen and his team for farmhouse bistro cuisine inspired by the flavors of the French countryside.   After 6 weeks of refreshing renovations, we are officially open for dinner and are currently accepting reservations. The Cottage Chef Owner Scott Heinonen is a graduate from the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Over the past 30 years, Heinonen has cooked throughout the Southwest, Pacific Northwest and Northern California. He has also completed numerous continuing education courses at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley. A highlight of this time was his stint as a private chef for Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. Returning to Flagstaff in 2005, Heinonen was the opening chef of the popular Cuvee 928 Wine Bar & Cafe, where his cooking was met with rave reviews and created a culinary buzz with local gourmands. Following this time at Cuvee, Heinonen fulfilled a lifelong goal of operating his own restaurant. Tinderbox Kitchen opened in May of 2009, leading the culinary resurgence of Flagstaff and San Francisco Street’s “Southside.” Heinonen’s concept of “American Comfort Food Redefined” quickly made Tinderbox a regional favorite, garnering numerous accolades and creating an stellar reputation statewide. 2017 brings a new culinary chapter for Heinonen with the opening of The Cottage, formerly the Cottage Place. He has transformed this long time, Flagstaff fine dining restaurant into a stylish farmhouse French bistro, which opened April 23, 2017 for dinner service. The Cottage cuisine reflects the regional country dishes of France, interpreted with Heinonen’s modern sensibility, incorporating locally sourced ingredients. Chef Heinonen’s culinary passion is deeply rooted in cooking with the seasons and the ever-changing menu of The Cottage will emanate this philosophy. Diners can look forward to exploring French cuisine prepared with heart and soul.

We saved Cottage Place for our last night in Flagstaff, "the best for last", but were very disappointed. It was not so much the food, as the tightness of the tables and the slow service. The arrive appetizer was delicious. I had grilled shrimp and beef tenderloin, and they were both cooked excellently. My wife had shrimp, but did not like the sauce, and did not like the quinoa that came with it. But the tables were lined up and so close together that it felt like a family meal with strangers. The busier it got, the less we saw our waiter. While waiting for the check, we agreed we felt like prisoners. The Chef spends a lot of time talking to customers, and has a loud, booming voice, somewhat disturbs the peace. I guess it just wasn't our thing. From the reviews I read, many like it. Because of the lack of ambience and the tight quarters, I was going to give 3, but because the food is very good, I upped it to a 4.

Duck is my favorite, but it is so easy to mess up. This place made a braised duck that was stupid good! I didn't want to finish it because if I finished it then that meant I couldn't have any more! The chef made numerous appearances in the dining room to talk to the guests. We bought his cookbook and didn't even have to ask him to sign it. The staff automatically took it to him and he signed it and hand delivered it back to us. He had a genuine warmth and welcoming demeanor.

The host was kind enough to move us to a private table in the enclosed front porch area when we couldn't hear over a party that was just really having a good time. This is the best table in the house. Everything on the menu sounded great and decided on the Chateaubriand for two. It included soup AND salad and we each had different choices. We had the mushroom and the shrimp bisque and both were great. The bread was an added treat and came with a whipped butter that had a hint of lemon and herb. The beef was excellent, done to perfection and no steak knives needed here. The tenderloin was served table side with carrots, broccolini and beautiful scallop potatoes. Kendra was all smiles and timed each course with a delightful pause. Can't imagine how anything could have been finer. Definitely the best in Flagstaff and then some. Very reasonably priced for a complete meal!

What a wonderful find this place is! South of the railroad tracks and away from the normal tourist haunts, you don’t just ‘happen by’ this place. Someone tells you about it (just like I am!) We first ate here a year or so ago and thoroughly enjoyed the quaint atmosphere (this place used to be someone’s home and the owners have retained the integrity of the structure.) In this college town bursting with brew pubs and hamburger joints, what a delight to enjoy a gourmet meal, beautifully prepared with fresh and local ingredients (we saw the chef at the farmer’s market the next morning!!) in a wonderful and inviting atmosphere. The staff is very professional, attentive and knowledgeable about every item on the menu.

The tableside rack of lamb for two was cooked to perfection and the accompanying potatoes were to die for. The spinach and goat cheese strudel was a good-size portion and came with a red pepper aioli and mash. The special fish of the day (flounder) was beautifully prepared and oh, so good. Although the desserts looked decadent, it just wasn’t going to happen!

Cottage Place is not open Mondays or Tuesdays so plan accordingly; and I would highly recommend making reservations.

My only complaint: we made reservations through Open Table about two months in advance. We were seated right next to the door into the kitchen which was very distracting. I know someone has to sit at that table, but note to owners: when someone makes a reservation that far in advance, they obviously WANT to dine in your establishment so you might want to make sure they at least seated at a nice table. This won't deter us from returning, but next time, we'll call to confirm the reservation as ask not to be seated at the 'time out' table.

Cottage Place gave us the finest dining experience we have ever enjoyed. It was not just the best overall, but every element including the atmosphere, the patrons, every member of the staff, every course from appetizer to dessert, and the wine was the best. The crab cakes were outstanding, the steelhead was delicious, the beef bourguignon was rich and tasty. The strawberry shortcake flambé was enormously entertaining. Try it for your next special occasion.
