Description: Welcome to The Cottage, formerly The Cottage Place. Join Chef Scott Heinonen and his team for farmhouse bistro cuisine inspired by the flavors of the French countryside.   After 6 weeks of refreshing renovations, we are officially open for dinner and are currently accepting reservations. The Cottage Chef Owner Scott Heinonen is a graduate from the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Over the past 30 years, Heinonen has cooked throughout the Southwest, Pacific Northwest and Northern California. He has also completed numerous continuing education courses at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley. A highlight of this time was his stint as a private chef for Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. Returning to Flagstaff in 2005, Heinonen was the opening chef of the popular Cuvee 928 Wine Bar & Cafe, where his cooking was met with rave reviews and created a culinary buzz with local gourmands. Following this time at Cuvee, Heinonen fulfilled a lifelong goal of operating his own restaurant. Tinderbox Kitchen opened in May of 2009, leading the culinary resurgence of Flagstaff and San Francisco Street’s “Southside.” Heinonen’s concept of “American Comfort Food Redefined” quickly made Tinderbox a regional favorite, garnering numerous accolades and creating an stellar reputation statewide. 2017 brings a new culinary chapter for Heinonen with the opening of The Cottage, formerly the Cottage Place. He has transformed this long time, Flagstaff fine dining restaurant into a stylish farmhouse French bistro, which opened April 23, 2017 for dinner service. The Cottage cuisine reflects the regional country dishes of France, interpreted with Heinonen’s modern sensibility, incorporating locally sourced ingredients. Chef Heinonen’s culinary passion is deeply rooted in cooking with the seasons and the ever-changing menu of The Cottage will emanate this philosophy. Diners can look forward to exploring French cuisine prepared with heart and soul.

“Can compete with the best anywhere!”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Four of us were staying in Flagstaff overnight before heading to the Grand Canyon the next day. This restaurant, although a little pricy was worth every single cent. Manhattan's best would be challenged by this dining experience. Our party of four, all raved about whatever we ordered, all four of us are orginally from NYC, two now live in Arizona. Service was top notched as was the wine selections. The chef prepared a special dessert (Bananas something or other) that was to die for. Make whatever plans you have too, but don't miss eating here. You'll thank me later.

“A "find" in Flagstaff”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

What a surprise to find this restaurant in Flagstaff. It could easily compete in any major city. The food was delicious and the welcome and service friendly. I ordered the tamales which were really good. The desert, especially the chocolate cake with cinnamon on top, was a great ending.

“Expected a bit more!”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

Since having a cabin up in the area, we have been exploring more of the restaurants in Flagstaff. This time we were looking for a special occasion restaurant since we were celebrating an anniversary. Cottage Place and Josephine's Bistro were both touted as being a bit more up-scale, fine-dining establishments. After looking over each restaurant's on-line menu, we chose the Cottage Place due to it's diversity over Josephine's. The restaurant is located in east Flag and parking was a bit of an issue; we were with friends in their big Dodge truck. The restaurant itself is very quaint (it's in a cottage after all!) and the service was awesome. Our coat's, scarves, etc. were taken at the door and we were greeted by the chef/owner and his wife; very nice touch. Our server was equally awesome. Now for the food; it was good but not great. I had the scallops which our server said was a popular dish; the scallops were good but the remoulade sauce on the side was a bit too mustard'y for me. My husband had the Beef Bourguignonne and it was excellent; a very hearty meal on a cold, snowy night. Our friends had the Gorgonzola encrusted filet; the filet was good and good to his liking however he did mention that it was a little on the salty side. The other dish our friend had was a vegetarian Spinach and Goat Cheese strudel which she did not finish; when asked she just said it was very rich. We passed on dessert but our server knew it was our anniversary and nothing special was added to the dinner. For the price, I expected a bit more out of the food and we will probably try another place in Flag for our next special occasion.

“Special Occasion”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Our friends took us to dinner here more than a year ago. The atmosphere, the ambience, and the food were amazing. So are our memories. Very expensive but worth a special occasion.

Fine dining indeed! Top notch wine selection and service. The lamb and beef dishes shine. Leave room for the sweet endings.
